DESCRIPTION

This is a two-part presentation made at the Museum & Gallery Services (Queensland) Networking event in December 2009. The first part outlines the rationale for the Queensland Museum contributing a small selection of high quality, copyright free social history photographs to Wikimedia as a first step towards developing a digitisation strategy. This is the first contribution made to Wikimedia by any Australian cultural heritage organisation with many mutual benefits arising. The second part demonstrates the use of NING as a social media platform for museum professionals to engage with and to share ideas.

Comment by Liam Wyatt on November 17, 2009 at 2:09pm Thanks for this and I can say that from the Wikipedia

perspective we're very happy to have these images to be available as this represents Australia's first cultural content donation to Wikimedia.

I personally announced this collaboration to the Wikimedia Multimedia Usability meeting in Paris last week and requests such as better reporting metrics (on usage, click-throughs etc.) is definitely on the agenda.Once again, thanks!

What’s Ning all about?

Ning is a social media tool that enables ‘communities of interest’ or ‘ special interest groups’ to interact, share ideas, highlight events and discuss emerging issues on-line.

Think of a ‘Professional Facebook’

Museums Australia have adopted Ning as their new communication platform
