Horror film analysis (camera shots “Women in Black”

This is a close up is when the camera is zoomed in and focuses on the object or character, this helps symbolises importance. Within the women in black they us a close up shot of one of the characters who has been cursed and has fallen very ill and blood is pouring from her mouth this causes the audience to feel emotion towards the girl because she is innocent and the pain of the blood allows the audiences to empathise with the audiences. Also another example of this type of shot is the close up of lawyer “Arthur Kipps” (Daniel Radcliffe) frantically trying to find where his friends are through the thick fog. This helps create a sense of urgency , it also helps the audiences identify the facial features of the character is showing which could be interoperated as fear and desperation towards the film The effect of pain within this shot also allows the audience to feel like they were apart of the movie by allowing them to feel the characters emotions and get involved within the movie this is the effect which the close up shot gain when being used within this horror film

Establishing shots help capture everything within the scene of a film and also the different aspects of the Mis En Scene. E.g. Props, Setting and lighting . This shot shows the location (setting) of the film which is within a isolated haunted manor. This also successfully helps the audience present the theme of the unfolding form of terror within the “Women In Black” another shot which I picked up within the film is when he left the manor and began walking into the marshes to find out what the dark silhouette he seen was doing in the marshes, this definitely helps me gain knowledge for the setting and also the age in which the film was set which was roughly in the 17th to 18th century, I believe that this I effective because the old fashion manor allows the film to have a “supernatural” feel due to the ancient clothing and also doe to the location it also causes the audiences adrenaline levels to increase doe to the fog which gives the horror film a greater depth of horror.

Establishing shot If you can see by the way he is dressed it shows that the film is based in the past. Also the old manor behind him also looks ancient which also gives the genre away from the audience

Point of view shot, this is when the shot is taken from the eyes of a specific character. This is when Arthur Kipps in investigates the isolated manor home which is apparently haunted. This is an point of view shot because it shows him looking down a spooky corridor. Because the shot is dark it creates suspense towards the audience because they feel like they are actually within the film and that anything could pop out and get them which will cause them to become afraid . The use of this shot also allows us to understand the character and their emotion. This shot is used to create the effect of anxiety which allows the audiences to be emotional invested into the film. Also point of view shot used within this film Is when Arthur is looking into the marshes and spots a spooky darkened image this plays on the mind of the audience. This could evidently cause the audiences to jump due to the sudden view of the actual “Main Criminal” this is what the directors wanted to prevent by using this shot
