Lewis’s Story
What does staying on in Education / Training or employment mean to us?
• More opportunities • Better employment choices• Increased knowledge - gain more skills• Stability• Positive image• More respected within society• Empowering you to go further
What is it that providers need to do to encourage young people to stay on in
education?• Positive reinforcement• Encouragement• Structure – Better timetable (other commitments)• An end goal – qualifications • Achievements • Recognition • Treat with respect (different relationships)• Different learning techniques to cater for everyone
What worked and didn’t work for us?
• Being forced to do subjects that do not interest us
• Teachers more worried about the uniform than supporting you to get better grades.
• Inconsistency in staffing• More about what the establishment looks like
than what students are achieving• Not listening to student voices
