What Purpose Do Hydraulic Fluids Serve?

» Offer corrosion protection and extended life – prolonging asset life and preventing unnecessary breakdowns

» Lower the need for maintenance and employee interaction with equipment – lowering costs and improving productivity through less downtime and equipment replacement

» Minimize environmental impact – offering sustainable products that require less volume, produce less waste and reduce energy use

» Ease of switching from mineral oil: no general hydraulic system modification, no special maintenance and compatibility with commonly used seal and hose material

» Minimize risk and maximize production with fire-resistant properties

What Types of Hydraulic Fluids are There?

»HFA – HIGH WATER CONTENT FLUIDS

»HFC – WATER GLYCOL FLUIDS

HFA – High Water Content Fluids

» HFA or high water content fluids (HWCF’s) are hydraulic fluids that combine the excellent fire resistant properties of water with lubrication and corrosion protection from an additive concentrate

» Because water is the major component (95% or more) of an HFA fluid, hydraulic equipment using this type of fluid must be capable of operating with a low viscosity fluid

» Water hydraulic equipment, while able to operate with water as the hydraulic medium, will benefit from the use of an HFA concentrate

» HFA concentrates lubricate valves and seals, improve seal life, inhibit corrosion in components and piping, and control bacterial and fungal growth in the system

» HFA – High Water Content Fluid Applications– Steel: Roll force & roll balance hydraulics, pickle line, cold rolling mill, temper

mill and tin rolling mill– Mining: Longwall roof supports

HFC – Water Glycol Fluids

» HFC or water glycol fluids are the most widely used fire- resistant hydraulic fluids because of their price-quality and their combination of fire-resistant properties with reasonable lubrication performance

» Contains enough water to prevent ignition that could occur in hydraulic systems operating under high pressure through sudden line ruptures or fluid contact with a high-temperature source

» Applications include slab caster slide gates and casting machines, hot mill roll force and roll balance hydraulics, pickle line and welders, annealing, die casting, foundry and forging

HFD-U – Synthetic Water Free Fluids

» HFD fluids are fire-resistant hydraulic fluids that do not contain water

» HFD fluids are usually based on synthetic base stocks or esters that combine reasonable to good fire-resistant properties with excellent lubrication performance

» Some are designed to replace anti-wear, mineral oil-based hydraulic fluids used in applications where fire hazards exist

» Additional Applications for QUINTOLUBRIC® 888 Series– Steel: Slab caster slide gates / hot mill roll force and roll balance / pickle line and welders / cold rolling mill /

annealing / tin rolling / automatic gage control (AGC) hydraulics– Aluminum: Cast houses / hot rolling mills– Seamless Tube & Pipe: Casting / rotary furnace / hot rolling lines / heat treating– Engine and Transmissions: Casting / heat-treating / press shops / forging / welding– Bearings: Casting / heat-treating hydraulics– Metal Extrusion: Furnaces / metal handling equipment / heat treating hydraulics– Forging: Presses / heat-treating hydraulics– Foundry: Casting / heat-treating hydraulics– Die Casting: Casting / heat-treating hydraulics
