What is GATE?

The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an All-India examinationadministered and conducted in eight zones across the country by the GATECommittee comprising of Faculty members from IISc, Bangalore and other seven IIT’son behalf of the National Coordinating Board, Department of Education, Ministry ofHuman Resources Development.

The GATE score/rank is used for admissions to Post Graduate Programmes (ME,M.Tech, MS, Direct Ph.D.) in institutes like IITs and IISc etc with financial assistanceoffered by MHRD.

PSUs too use the GATE scores for recruiting candidates for various prestigious jobswith attractive remuneration.

GATE exam primarily tests the comprehensive understanding of the candidate invarious undergraduate subjects in Engineering.

The GATE score reflects the relative performance level in a particular branch.

GATE score is valid for three years.

What is GATE? Pattern of Question Paper


All the papers of GATE will be conducted by an ONLINE computer Based Test (CBT).

The GATE paper consists of questions of both multiple choice type and numericalanswer type.

For numerical answer type questions, the candidates have to enter a number as theanswer using a virtual key board.

The GATE examination consists of a single paper of 3 hour duration that contains 65questions carrying a maximum of 100 marks.

Completed or final year students of BE /B.Tech or its equivalent.

MSc/MA/MCA can also apply.

There is no upper age Limit.

The syllabi for the exam in Engineeringstreams include General aptitude(Numerical & Verbal) for 15 marks,Engineering Mathematics for 10 to 13marks and the rest of 72 to 75 marks intechnical subjects studied at B.Tech level.

GATE is considered to be the standard examination conducted not only for postgraduation admissions but also to open the gates for lucrative opportunities inseveral public sector enterprises and research organizations.

If you were unlucky in IIT JEE, you can get one more chance to realize your cherishedgoal of studying in IISc / IITs by taking GATE

You can get a financial aid of RS 12400/- per month in the form of MHRD scholarship.

Based on the score achieved in GATE, admissions are offered in IITs, IISc, and NITs,and abundant opportunities for campus placements with salary packages rangingfrom Rs. 6 lakh to 30 lakh.

Why GATE?


You can shift to management side by doing PG Diploma of 2 year in Industrialengineering in NITIE Mumbai, where admissions are based on GATE score andinterview.

If you don’t have first class in Engineering and if it is a hurdle to apply for some of thejobs like teaching, it can be overcome by doing M.Tech/ MS.

You can try for MS admissions based on GATE score in some of the foreignUniversities like in Singapore and Malaysia.

Some institutes in India also offer admissions in the post Graduate programmes on the basis of GATE score.

Duration and Marks

The GATE examination consists of a single paper of 3-hourduration that contains 65 questions carrying a maximum of100 marks. The question paper will consist of both multiplechoice questions (MCQ) and numerical answer type (NAT)questions.



Pattern of Question PapersIn all the papers, there will be a total of 65 questionscarrying 100 marks, out of which 10 questions carryinga total of 15 marks will be on General Aptitude (GA).

In the papers bearing the codes AE, AG, BT, CE, CH, CS,EC, EE, IN, ME, MN, MT, PE, PI, TF and XE, theEngineering Mathematics will carry around 15% of thetotal marks, the General Aptitude section will carry15% of the total marks and the remaining 70% of thetotal marks is devoted to the subject of the paper.

Pattern of Question Papers

(i) Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) carrying 1 or 2 markseach in all papers and sections. These questions areobjective in nature, and each will have a choice of fouranswers, out of which the candidate has to mark thecorrect answer(s).

(ii) Numerical Answer Questions of 1 or 2 marks each in allpapers and sections. For these questions the answer is areal number, to be entered by the candidate using thevirtual keypad. No choices will be shown for this type ofquestions.



Marking Scheme

For 1-mark multiple-choice questions, 1/3 mark willbe deducted for a wrong answer. Likewise, for 2-markmultiple-choice questions, 2/3 mark will be deductedfor a wrong answer. There is NO negative marking fornumerical answer type questions.



General Aptitude (GA) QuestionsIn all papers, GA questions carry a total of 15 marks. The GAsection includes 5 questions carrying 1-mark each (sub-total 5marks) and 5 questions carrying 2-marks each (sub-total 10marks).

These papers would contain 25 questions carrying 1-mark each(sub-total 25 marks) and 30 questions carrying 2-marks each(sub-total 60 marks). The question paper will consist ofquestions of multiple choice and numerical answer type. Fornumerical answer questions, choices will not be given.Candidates have to enter the answer (which will be a realnumber, signed or unsigned, e.g., 25.06, -25.06, 25, -25 etc.)using a virtual keypad.

Negative Marking

For a wrong answer chosen for the multiple choicequestions (MCQs), there would be negative marking.For 1-mark multiple choice questions, 1/3 mark willbe deducted for a wrong answer. Likewise, for 2-markmultiple choice questions, 2/3 mark will be deductedfor a wrong answer. However, there is NO negativemarking for a wrong answer in numerical answer typequestions.

GATE Score

After the evaluation of the answers, the raw marksobtained by a candidate will be converted to anormalized GATE Score.

The GATE score will be computed using the formula given below.
