PALM ISLAN

Things behind it, are as follows…

WHERE ?1. The City of Dreams: DUBAI
2. Location
WHY?Dubai is famous for its GOLD & OIL RESERVES.
By 2018, its main income Oil Reserves will get over.
To over come this problem, the Crown Prince “SHAKE MOHAMED BIN RASHEED AHAMAD” has a 2 billion dollar plan to convert Dubai into a luxurious tourist destination.
To put Dubai in map, he had constructed one of the luxurious hotel, top class golf, race coarse and was planning for world’s tallest building.
The crown prince idea was to increase the tourism from 5 million to 15 million.
Dubai's tourism mainly depends upon the coastal area but there was no enough space for
15 million people. So, he decided to construct an island on Persian gulf.
By the following ways, the formation of Palm Island had got the shape.
WHEN? World's best engineers were needed for the
project. Dutch, who have increased Holland's land by 35%. They were booked.
To blend in with surroundings crown prince wanted the island to be built only by using sand and rocks.
Which is 94 million cubic meter of sand and 5.5 million cubic meter of rocks.
Hence, The Palm Jumeirah was started on AUGUST 2001 and crown prince idea was to finish it by 2006.

CONSTRUCTION STEPS
Step-1 Estimation of WAVE STRENGTH
Step-2 Construction of BREAKWATER
Step-3 SAND FILLING and COMPACTION
Step-4 Construction of BUILDINGS
Step-1 Estimation of WAVE STRENGTH
To estimate the strength of the waves, Research team worked out that Arabian gulf and declared that Breakwater has to be constructed having height up to 3 m & 11.5 Km long.
Dredgers would collect sand from the sea and dump it where break water was to be constructed. For the construction, 5.5 million cubic meter of rock was needed. They were taken from quarries of UAE. Each piece of rock weighed about 6 tons which is excavated from 16 quarries across UAE.
Step 2 Construction of BREAKWATER
Step 3A SAND FILLING
94 million cubic meter of sand was needed for the construction of this island .
Step 3B COMPACTION
The sand was just sprayed but was not compacted . First they thought of Roller compacting later they considered earthquake effect and allowed Vibro
Compaction method.
Step-4 Construction of BUILDINGS
By march 2004, Phase 1 was finished and by 2006 the whole construction of the buildings must be done. Before it was estimated for 60,000 people but later it was made double because of demand.

CONCLUSION By this, success of Palm Island the Crown Prince planed for another palm shaped island which is three times
bigger than “PALM JUMEIRAH” and named it as “PALM JEBEL ALI” & constructed the islands which looks like the
world from space and named it was “THE WORLD”.
