The Benefits of Ferris Independent Suspension
The overview
There are seven key points (sweet spots) to consider when assessing Ferris’ independent suspension.
They are summarised in the following slides and covered in detail later in this course.
The Seven Sweet Spots
1 Productivity• You can mow for longer, legally

2 Accuracy
• All the steering wheels are on the ground, all the time

The Seven Sweet Spots
Productivity
The Health & Safety Executive (HSE) stipulates how long a machine can be used each day based on how much vibration it generates.
Two vibration measurements affect mowers:• Whole Body Vibration (WBV)• Hand Arm Vibration (HAV)
Lower vibration, longer hours
Independent suspension dramatically reduces Whole Body Vibration.
By reducing vibration, Ferris ride-on mowers can legally be used for longer than many other mowers.
Lower vibration, longer hours
Local Authorities are especially conscious of HSE recommendations. It is cheaper and more responsible to follow HSE recommendations than face litigation from injured staff.
Lower vibration, longer hours
The HSE publish calculators that specify how long a machine can be used based on its vibration.
Proving the point
Whole Body Vibration calculator• www.hse.gov.uk/vibration/wbv/calculator.htm
Proving the point
Hand Arm Vibration calculator• www.hse.gov.uk/vibration/hav/vibrationcalc.htm
Proving the point
The results to focus on are:• Exposure Action Value (EAV)• Exposure Limit Value (ELV)
These numbers illustrate the amount of vibration an operator has been subjected to during a day’s work.
Proving the point
Exposure Action Value (EAV)• If a mower exceeds this value during a day
the owner is advised to show they have assessed the risk to the operator and taken necessary precautions.
A mower with independent suspension vibrates less so it can be used longer before reaching the EAV.
Proving the point
Exposure Limit Value (ELV)• The operator must stop using a machine once
this value has been reached.
A mower with independent suspension vibrates less so it can be used longer before reaching the ELV.

Productivity summary
Independent suspension
Less vibration
Longer working hours
Higher productivity
Reduced costs
Accuracy
Independent suspension keeps the drive wheels on the ground.
Wheels on the ground can steer the mower.
Wheels in the air can’t.
Better steering, more accuracy
Safety
Independent suspension keeps the braking wheels on the ground. This can become critical when loading and unloading mowers.
Wheels on the ground can stop the mower.
Wheels in the air can’t.
Effective braking, enhanced safety
Cutting quality
The cutting deck floats with the wheels not the mower’s main chassis.
As the wheels follow the terrain, so does the cutting deck.
Floating deck, better cut
Reliability
All new Ferris ride-on mowers have a 4-year warranty on the independent suspension parts.
This covers the lifetime of most Local Authority contracts.
This is in addition to standard warranty.
4-year warranty
Unique
Ferris is the only manufacturer to offer all-wheel independent suspension.
If you want the advantages independent suspension brings, there’s only one option.
Only with Ferris
Chassis life
All-round independent suspension extends the working life of a mower by reducing three types of chassis stress:• Torsional stress from uneven ground• Jolts from holes, bumps and kerbs• Vibration from general use
Less vibration, longer life
