Definition of Lean
The systematic method for the elimination of waste ("Muda") within a system.
Also takes into account waste created through overburden ("Muri") and waste created through unevenness in work loads ("Mura").
NOTE: We are NOT talking about reducing calories here :-)!!
Lean Principles
The following are the generic principles of Lean. They can also be called the 7 kinds of WasteElimination of Waste due to Overproduction
Elimination of Waste due to Waiting
Elimination of Waste due to Excessive Inventory
Elimination of Waste due to Excessive Motion
Elimination of Waste due to Excessive Transport
Elimination of Waste due to Over-Processing
Elimination of Waste due to Defects
Lean Principles
Application For Thanksgiving
The following are the elements of Lean that I believe can be applied to Thanksgiving. Eliminate the waste of overproduction by having a guest count-The question of having enough food and over-preparing can lead to excess left-overs and wasted food. To avoid having too much, do a little prep-work before the big day and get a ballpark count of how many guests youll be feeding
Eliminate the waste of waiting by planning ahead-To eliminate the risk of keeping your guests waiting because dinner is taking longer than expectedbe sure to have your turkey properly defrosted so the cooking time isnt added.
Application For Thanksgiving (continued)
Eliminate your waste of inventory by not falling for holiday sale pricing- having too many left-overs that might spoil. Be wary of buying excess stock in Thanksgiving foods just because they are on sale.
Eliminate the waste of motion by restricting visitors to your kitchen-If you have a small kitchen, it would be to your benefit to keep excess visitors out
At present time, I have yet to determine how to apply the remain three kinds of waste to Thanksgiving. Perhaps the reader may have a few ideas. Comments and ideas are appreciated.
Closing Thoughts Regarding Lean & Thanksgiving
Lean manufacturing, above all, is customer focused. Customers may be internal to your family (organization / business) or external to your family (organization / business). This Thanksgiving holiday take the time to do the following as part of celebrating and giving thanks. Take the time to talk to, and get to know, your friends and family (your employees and customers).
Ask your friends and family (your employees and customers) what they think, and what they are thankful for
Say thank you, and mean it.
Closing Thoughts Regarding Lean & Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving is about giving thanks to all. Doing this will go a long way to ensuring future success
