Work:

Main work of petroleum engineers is to search oil and gas reservoirs in different parts of globe.

After discovery of these resources, petroleum engineers work with geologists, geophysicists and other specialists to understand the geologic formation and properties of the rock containing the reservoir, determine the drilling methods to be used, and monitor drilling and production operations.

Petroleum Engineering

Work (continued):

As we know, only a small proportion of oil and gas in a reservoir can come out under natural forces; Petroleum engineers develop and use various enhanced methods to recover it.

They also design equipment and propose different mechanisms to achieve the maximum profitable recovery of oil and gas.

These processes include injecting water, chemicals, gases, or steam into an oil reservoir to force out more of the oil, and computer-controlled drilling to connect a larger area of a reservoir to a single well.

How can you be a Petroleum Engineer?

A bachelor's degree in engineering is required for almost all entry-level engineering jobs.

The requirements to get a seat in an undergraduate engineering college, there should be a solid background in mathematics (algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and calculus) and science (chemistry, and physics), and courses in English and computer and information technology.

How can you be a Petroleum Engineer?

There are many good colleges which are providing a degree in Petroleum Engineering in India.

Main colleges are : IITB, ISM, IITkgp, RGPIT, UPES, PDPU & UTM.

You can get a seat in these institutes by cracking national level competitive entrance exams such as-

JEE-MAINS, JEE-ADVANCE, UPSEAT.

How can you be a Petroleum Engineer?

An engineering degree is given after studying for 4 years in a college.

In this 4-years of college, the first 2 years are spent studying mathematics, basic sciences, syllabuses almost touching +2 portion.

Petroleum engineering students are also provided with courses such as Geophysics, Sedimentology, and Physical Geology during these years.

Next 2 years, courses such as Drilling and Production, seismic surveying, Geophysics, Well Performance, Reservoir Fluids testing, Well logging etc. are introduced.

Petroleum Engineering

Earnings:

The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) conducts a global salary survey of its members.

The most recent survey (2004) reported an average income of $1,01,634 (60,98,040 INR) pa for these engineers.

They are the highly paid amongst other engineers.

Petroleum Engineering

Employment:

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2,16,000 workers are in oil and gas extraction alone, up from 1,21,200 in 2004.

Petroleum engineers are mostly in oil and gas extraction works, scientific and technical services, and petroleum refining.

They are mostly posted in USA, Venezuela, Russia & Arabian countries.
