INTRODUCTION This system is developed by

Volkswagen group Direct injection diesel system Forced induction by way of

turbocharger to increased amount of air

Used intercooler to lower temp( increase density)

As high compress air supply, increasing amount of fuel injected

This combination allow greater engine efficiency

Page 3: Turbo charged diesel engine

TDI engine is turbopcharged and intercooler diesel engine

Turbo provide more torque Fuel injector sprays directly into main

combustion rather than separetess

Page 5: Turbo charged diesel engine

Improvements over previous Diesels

Fuel injection system are electronically control

Injection timing are quantity are electronically control

Variable geometry turbocharger are used

Electronically emission control (EGR) system

Common rail system

Page 6: Turbo charged diesel engine

Simple working

Air is drawn through intercooler Then compressed in turbocharger Intercool is used to decrease temp. After cooled density is increses Then pass to intake manifold ,mixed

with exhaust from EGR for emission control

There is no throttle, piezo electric valves injected high pressurised fuel

TURBOCHARGER Increase amount of air (density) Locate at exhausr side Convert exhaust to mechani- cal work Compressor wheel is driven

by shaft High Compress air in the turbocharger passed to intake

Difference between Turbo & Super Both are forced induction In super there is belt that connects

directly to the engine A turbo gets its power from the

exhaust steam Turbo are more efficient ,it uses wasted

energy for its power source Turbo creates back pressure Supercharger are more expensive

Exhaust Gas Recirculation

NOx emission reducti – on technique Works by recirculating portion of engines exhaust Reduced throttling losses Reduced heat rejection Reduced chemical dissociation Reduced specific heat ratio

Page 11: Turbo charged diesel engine

Piezo Injectors-making a quick switch Precision in controlling injec- tion process Operate 5 times more quickly Reduced fuel consumption & emission Actuated by piezo crystals Reduced fuel consumption =3% Lower pollutant emission = 20% Increase engine power = 5% Reduction in noise =3 decibles

Page 12: Turbo charged diesel engine

Common Rail System Steel rigid pipe line Pressure available permanently Pressure generation &fuel injection independently Improve pulverization process Fuel economy = 25-35% Noise reduction due to more synchronized timing operation

Glowplug At cold condition engine unable to start Not generate & maintain enou- gh heat to ignite fuel Heating device to warm the engine Below 10sec even at -10 celcius Older engine choke = 3 MPFI or CRDI sensor is used =1.5 In TDI normal supply = 0.3
