Texas has the world’s most ridiculous beer law 1

Are you standing? You are? Oh crap, how many sips of your beer have you taken? TWO! Stop or at least sit down! In Texas,

it’s illegal to have more than three sips of beer while standing up. If you need a visual aid. This… legal. This… totally illegal.

Egyptians dranka LOT of beer 2

Beer was a big part of the ancient world since water wasn’t always safe to drink. Beer was

also very easy to make given its simple ingredients.

The builders of the Great Pyramid of Giza were even paid with a daily ration of beer. In fact,

since it was unlikely for alcoholic beverages to contain water borne illnesses or bacteria,

beer was regularly consumed all the way up until tea and coffee became a daily staple.

Think about that! Most of the ancient world might have been 3 sheets to the wind for a

good part of their day.

Here’s a fun fact. Courage brewery in England re-created an authentic Egyptian Beer that

you can try for $75 / bottle. Maybe something to Tilt for your next party?

Duff McKagan thinks The Simpsons Duff Beer is named after him. It’s not. 3

You are probably too young to remember Guns and Roses but they

had a decent song in the 1990s where Slash played guitar outside a

church in the middle of the desert and girls everywhere lost their…

minds. The legendary Duff beer in The Simpsons was named after

Duff McKagan who is a bassist for Guns and Roses and sort of looks

like David Bowie with long hair. He was known for consuming large

amounts of alcohol thus, assumed that the beer was named after him.

Fun fact, the creator of The Simpsons, Matt Groening, the guy who

actually invented Duff beer says that “this claim is absurd”.

So long story short, Duff McKagan isn’t the inspiration behind the

name, but he likes to tell people he is.

Forget Bud Light, Guinness is just as good for the ol’ waistline 4

But it’s so thick, it must be loaded with calories! Nope. In fact 12 ounces

of “the black stuff” clocks in at 125 calories. Bud Light, or as I like to call

it, Beer Flavored Water has 110 calories / 12 ounces. So for an extra 15

calories you can have a real beer instead. Go figure.

Guinness is also very high in iron and low in alcohol (4.2%). This is pro-

bably why it’s a popular choice amongst beautiful female celebrities like

Gwyneth Paltrow and Beyonce.

PBR is an exotic import in China 5

PBR has been a staple of the american college diet since the mid 1990s and unless you

are really bad at negotiating you likely paid around $2-3 for that PBR in your hand.

If you are feeling really classy this weekend here’s what you have to do:

1. Grab some buds (pun intended)

2. Fly to China

3. Enjoy a $44 / bottle of PBR

Don’t let the wine bottle shape confuse you, this is PBR true and true. While only available

for sale in China, aged in un-charred whiskey barrels, this caramel malted and super hoppy

beer is worth trying.

Actors Drink a Lot on Set 6

What are all those celebs hammering back in movies and TV? It used to be carbonated ice tea, now

it’s O’Doul’s.

O’Doul’s is what we call a “near beer” since it clocks in at 0.5% alcohol. Even though it won’t get you

drunk, a lot of actors complain about the bloated, heavy feeling after doing 10-20 takes. An excep-

tion to this rule was Will Forte (the middle guy). He has an unnatural ability to chug beer in spite of his

small stature. He would regularly consume 10-15 real beers / day while filming Beerfest in 2005-6.

In stark contrast, is the 2013 cult hit Drinking Buddies. Olivia Wilde and Jake Johnson told reporters

that they drank real beer, did many takes, and regularly had to stop filming for bathroom breaks and

being ‘too drunk’ to remember lines or cues.

In past, say on the set of Cheers for example, the cast would often be drinking carbonated ice tea.

For darker beers (like a Guinness perhaps?) they would add a diet coke to give it that dark, murky

look. Interesting? I guess so.

Beer is the oldest alcoholic beverage. 7

In 4000 BC, Sumerians used some very old bread to make some

very “malty” beer. 5 guesses for how good it tasted!

The Sumerians took beer brewing so seriously that they even had a

Goddess that looked after the whole process called Ninkasi. We

were lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the current Goddess of

Beer, pictured below.

You can’ t make this stuff up!
