Does my use of conventions indicate what other
trailers have influenced my theatrical trailer?Strangers Again
Strangers Again trailer have influenced me well on how to create a trailer because of its
interesting and exciting storyline that many people can relate with. I also like the type of
music they have used for their trailer because it links in well with the narrative. Acoustic
music tends to be appropriate for the drama/romance genre because of its meaningful
lyrics and also how soothing the song can be. The use of typography and muted scenes
allows the viewers to think about their own opinion about the storyline. I was particularly
inspired when on the pan of the phone as if the viewers are on the male‟s side. My
theatrical trailer looks fairly similar to this trailer however, in just a different context.
Does my use of conventions indicate what other
trailers have influenced my theatrical trailer?Film Poster
I was greatly influenced by these two posters because of its unique and creative idea.
The use of photomontage of the couple that created a heart shape suggests makes it
looks really effective, which the viewers can straight away tell that this is a
drama/romance film. The same on the left poster, the title is supported by the design and
layout creating a cut out of a sun to suggest „Summer‟. I have achieved this on my own
poster my creating my own hourglass and added images of the couple inside.
Does my use of conventions indicate what other trailers have
influenced my theatrical trailer?
Magazine Cover
I was particularly influenced by Total Film magazines because of how busy their
magazine can be. I like the way how they add posters at the side corner to make
advertising more interesting for them. I also didn‟t care about the masthead because it is
already a well known title. Instead, I emphasized the title of the film well so that audience
will know straightaway what the title is called. However, I challenge the conventions with
the actors not looking at the camera to suggest that they are new actors which will make
the audience want to watch the film.
How does your media product represent particular
social groups? The social group that I was aiming for my theatrical trailer and for my ancillary products
is females who are affected from being heartbroken. I chose this social group because
they are always the one who feels vulnerable at the end and this is emphasised by close
ups to be able to tell her facial expressions.
Most drama/romantic films tends to focus more on women because they are the ones
who deeply cares more about the relationship and they offer more emotions when it
comes to love, so this becomes interesting for the audience to watch it. I chose
heartbroken women as my social group because they fantasies quickly about their
dream man how their dream man should have acted, leading them to fantasies how life
could be if it were like a film.
Who would be the audience for you theatrical trailer?
My target audience would be teenagers to young adults both male and female at the of
12 – 25. I chose this age group because they can relate easily to the plot as well as the
scenes will be acceptable and suitable for the age of 12 and over.
I will rate my trailer to the „12A‟ category because it‟s acceptable for everybody to watch.
I realised that my age group are the right age to fall in love, and this is the right age to
use films for inspiration about love. Romantic films such as „Notebook‟ and „Dear John‟
are at the 12/12A category and these films are the type of film that I am aiming to do.
The ‘12A’ category exists only for cinema films. No one younger than 12 may see a ‘12A’ film in a cinema unless
accompanied by an adult, and films classified ‘12A’ are not recommended for a child below 12. An adult may take
a younger child if, in their judgment, the film is suitable for that particular child. In such
circumstances, responsibility for allowing a child under 12 to view lies with the accompanying adult.
How did you attract or address your audience? (Theatrical
trailer)I have used a close up shot on
their conversation to attract the
viewers on what is happening.
And since Facebook is currently
famous, maybe this could give
some audience a few tips about
love.
I have also used typography on
my trailer to aid the audience
on what is happening through
their actions.
I have also used slow
motion in some clips
to add a touch of
romance to my trailer
as if they want to
spend more time with
each other longer.
I used weather shot on
this scene as it‟s
beginning to look like
sunset, which suggest
that this is the end of
their relationship too.
This is the last scene of the
trailer as Rose is about to get
ran over by a car. I used fade to
white to end this film because
she is vulnerable and innocent
on relation to the context.
How did you attract or address your audience? (Film Poster)
I have attracted my target
audience by following the
codes and conventions of
romance film poster. I used
natural beige and black
colours because those are
the usual colours that are
used in romantic films.
I have created a
photomontage poster
because most of the
romantic film poster does
this idea to express the
memories of the couple
have with each other.
I created an hourglass
shape on my canvas to
support the film title. I also
added a few photos of the
two actors to suggest that
their love has complete
ran out. But also, it
suggest death because
Rose will die at the end of
the trailer.
The tagline would intrigue my
target audience because this
will lead them to think about
the possibilities about what
the other two options could
be. I made sure that the
tagline doesn‟t just talk about
the couple in the trailer, I
made sure that it will involve
everyone so that they will feel
that they are part of the film.
How did you attract or address your audience? (Magazine
Cover)I continue to use the codes and
conventions of a magazine
cover by adding the basics
such as, masthead, main
image, barcode and price, title
of the film, sub headings, etc. I
did this so that my audience
will be attracted to buy this
magazine.
I wasn‟t bothered much about
the masthead as nearly most
of the text is covered by the
main image and other two
small pictures. I did this in
purpose because most of the
well known magazines doesn‟t
need to show off their name
compare to new magazine
brands.
I have added two small images that acts like posters because
Total Film are famous for advertising movie posters. This acts
as my unique selling point to attract many readers to buy this
magazine.
The main image challenges
the codes and conventions of
a magazine because the
actors are not looking at the
camera. I did this in purpose
so that the audience will be
entice to find out who these
new actors could be.
I have used slang language
to this magazine
“sweetest”, so that young
teenagers will be attracted to
read this magazine. This also
means that I will have a
wider audience.
There is also a story in this main image as the girl feels vulnerable over
the boy as if he doesn‟t care about her anymore in result of turning his
back to her.
How effective is the combination of your main product and
ancillary texts?
I have created a sense of branding to my theatrical trailer, poster and magazine cover
to provide the audience a little of knowledge of what the plot will be about. I have
made my actress, Rose, vulnerable which is obvious in the three products below.
With the plot, she is always the one who gets hurt and heartbroken.
On the magazine cover, I particularly chose the colour red to represent danger which
relates well with the ending as this will lead her to death. The way that she turns her
head to AJ suggest that she is vulnerable as if the male doesn‟t want her anymore.
In the theatrical trailer, Rose is again vulnerable which is emphasised by close ups
and high angle shots to be able to tell what her expressions are like and how exposed
she is from danger.
The film poster again represents her vulnerability as if the hourglass shows that there
is no hope between the lovers.
What have you leant from your audience feedback?
I did several questionnaire from the target audience by filling in a questionnaire
about getting to know more bout my target audience and about how my target
audience would react to my chosen genre.
With my first questionnaire, I wanted to know more about what my target
audience likes and dislikes. This has gained my knowledge about their likings
and evaluate the things that I should do and things that I shouldn‟t do to my
products.
With my second questionnaire, I wanted to know more about how my target
audience would react to drama/romance films. Luckily, my target audience
enjoys to watch romantic movies and this has given me an idea on what they
expect in a theatrical romantic trailer.
What have you leant from your audience feedback?
During class, we did a class feedback for all of my products which has helped me tremendously on
what to improve and what to keep.
For my theatrical trailer, my class has given me feedbacks on what they think about trailer.
I found this technique useful because it helped me notice things that I have never thought of
changing such as, some clips are too long, some clips need to improve its lighting, etc. And this
has allowed me to make improvements on my theatrical trailer to make it more successful and
effective.
I also had positive feedbacks about the theatrical trailer which has boost my confidence that I am
heading at the right direction.
We also did a class feedback with our ancillary products. There wasn‟t any problems suggested on
my magazine cover however, one suggested that the magazine cover doesn‟t look too convincing
that the theme is romance/drama. With this help, I arranged another photo shoot with the two
actors rather than just focus on one, to emphasise to the audience that it‟s a romantic film that I am
advertising.
For my film poster, the majority said that the tagline were too long but the overall outcome is
effective. I accepted the class opinion and found a new improved tagline that links in well with the
storyline.
How did you use new media technologies in the research and
planning, construction and evaluation stages?
Research and Planning
To do my research and planning, I have chosen to use blogger so that I am able to add
multimedia technologies on my blog such as add
images, videos, sounds, hyperlinks, and so on. Using a blogs is really effective because
it allows me to add labels to my posts so that it easier to look for rather than having to
scroll down, which can take a lot of time. Compare to my ability last year in AS, I have
now have a better understanding and knowledge about using my blog effectively. This
year, the techniques that I have to learn are more defined as I have to create
storyboards and analyse theatrical trailers, posters and magazine cover in greater detail
to be able to have better knowledge on what I am supposed to do for my final outcome.
Research and planning has also increased my knowledge about different media
technologies that I could use such as Picnik for editing image and exploring new
fonts, Unsignedbandweb to be able to download music for free, and also use sound
effects by downloading it from FreeSound. Research and planning has also given me
more knowledge about cameraworks which has been a huge help when I began to film.
Construction
As I was filming, I was using a digital video camera and a tripod which has boost my
confidence and manage it correctly. To be able to get the desired shot that I want, I just
simply went back to my research and planning to find out how to achieve a certain shot.
For photo shoots, I used a DSLR to take my photographs which the outcome turned out
to look professional and in best quality.
I have managed to learn new software to be able to edit my film, poster and magazine
cover. I mostly used Photoshop to edit my poster and magazine cover which I became
more confident with it. I really enjoyed using this software because its easy to add
effects on the images and also, it contains many features that allows you to warp images
to a desired shape which means that it is good for editing, and its easy to navigate
around the software.
To edit my theatrical trailer, the software the I used was iWeb. I enjoyed using this
software because it‟s easy to navigate around and also it allows me to add special
effects to my video. I really like how there‟s a variety of typography that I could use for
my theatrical trailer. However, I did experience some difficulties with iWeb because I am
not familiar with the software. I am more familiar with Windows Movie Maker however, I
wanted to experience something new by experimenting with iWeb.
How did you use new media technologies in the research and
planning, construction and evaluation stages?
Evaluation
To do my evaluation, I used Microsoft PowerPoint so that I can place different topics to different
slides so that it doesn‟t confuse the examiner. I like to use this software because it allows me add
different multimedia technologies such as, adding tables, charts, images, movies and sound. The
evaluation will also be uploaded in slideshare.
To evaluate my final products, overall, I feel that I did a successful job on editing my theatrical
trailer, film poster and magazine cover. However, If I had another chance to make changes of my
products I would:
- Add more interesting scenes on my theatrical trailer by making the car accident look real; add
more crying scenes to make it obvious that it‟s a drama; improve some clips were it shows to
be blurry and fuzzy.
- Add more images to my film poster and improve the typography of the title
- Add more sub headings to my magazine cover so that my target audience will be enticed to
read the magazine.
During the production, I had a few problems and challenges occurred as one of my actor tends to
become lazy when it comes to filming. One thing that I have learnt when producing a project is to
choose the right actor to be able to achieve a successful production. Overall, I was happy with my
final products.
