There are a variety of camera shots and angles used throughout the music video. The most common is the close up of various character’s faces. The main character is show to feel very
isolated and upset through these shots. The other character’s expressions show how they are judgemental toward him. The establishing shot at the opening scene presents the
location of the office, showing the audience how the protagonist is leading a normal life. There is a track used when the man and dog are running in the park, conveying their strong bond and relationship as pet and owner. There is an over- the shoulder shot when the three men are attempting to assault his love interest and he intervenes to protect her. This is a bold move from him as he conveys to the audience his affection towards her, and how the
bullying has gone too far; to the point where he finally feels confident enough to stand up to his bullies. A hand-held camera is used during the fight scene which portrays a frantic and
chaotic fight. There is a close up of a rain puddle which is ironic as rain is a symbol of sadness (pathetic fallacy), however, the weather is a contrast of the switching moods as the
female/lover finally notices the protagonist. There is a two shot of the two characters holding hands, happily skipping in the dark and gloomy street: a contrast of the mood and
lighting. This conveys to the audience that the couple will indeed pursue a happy relationship.
There is both diegetic and non-diegetic sound used throughout the music video. The non-diegetic sound being the soundtrack of the music used.
There are diegetic sounds in the office where the characters are working, conveying the normality of the office. In the beginning, the female shrieks at the sight of the protagonist, immediately tells the audience that he is
judged based upon his appearance. The way she covers it up with a nervous laughter creates a disheartening tone, displaying to the audience
how his looks have affected him throughout his life. There are also diegetic noises of their footsteps and her unlocking the front door, which
keeps the music video realistic. At the end, we hear the sound of her kissing him on the cheek giving him hope as she has finally shown
interest in him after all this time.
The Mise-en-scene throughout the video conveys the fact that the protagonist is being pre-judged, but eventually standing up for himself. The setting of the video is a normal 9 to 5 office. This shows the simplicity and normality of the characters. The protagonist’s home is shown,, which continues to show the
normality of his life despite having a deformed face. It tells the audience that no matter how different you may seem to the norm, you can still live a
normal life. He also has a pet dog, who is small, cute and friendly: a man’s bestfriend. The costume is stereotypical of the workplace; business attire. His
love interest is dressed in more stylish clothes with natural make-up. The protagonist has heavy costume make-up to make his face appear freakishly different. The lighting throughout is quite dark and dim, setting the mood for
the music which is sad but promising. There are various props used, the most significant being a mug, which has had its words scribbled out to ‘World’s Greatest Freak’, conveying how the character is criticized for the way he
looks and causes the audience to sympathise with him.
There are a few editing techniques used within the music video. The main straight cuts between each shot. There are also a series of jump cuts used
during the fight scene which speeds up the pace of the narrative, causing his actions to look more frantic and chaotic. There are also filters used during the
park scenes, giving the scenes more of a positive and calm atmosphere, showing his optimism despite hw people treat him. There is also a slow motion when the dog is running to show ease and simplicity. It represents how the dog
is one of the main sources of true happiness; their bond.
