ANDREW GOODWIN’S 6 FEATURES OF A MUSIC VIDEO Daniel Mills

1. MUSIC VIDEOS DEMONSTRATE GENRE CHARACTERISTICS

This is when certain music videos show the same characteristics depending on the type of music. For example the video wait and bleed by slipknot shows them performing on stage.

2. THERE IS A RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LYRICS AND VISUAL This means that the lyrics within in the song are

normally depicted within the music video. An example of the is from the video Fire with Fire by the Letter Black where the main lyrics repeated within the chorus is “fighting fire with fire” and the band are also surrounded by fire when performing.

3. RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MUSIC AND VISUALS

The relationship between music and visuals is where to video is effected by the style and tempo of the music. An example of this is in the video California king bed by Rihanna where the movement of camera shots are very slow and even the lighting is very soft.

4. THE DEMANDS OF THE RECORDING LABEL.

The recording label will normally need lots of close ups of the artist they are trying to promote. An example of this could be shown in Lady Gaga’s work wear she is the centre of attention throughout her work.

5. THERE IS FREQUENCY REFERENCE TO NOTION OF LOOKING This is where throughout the music video everything is

angled towards the artist by normally drawing their eyes. In pop music this is normally done through the costumes that they wear which can be eye catching mainly because of the sexual appeal and example of this is in Jenifer Lopez’s video I’m Into You where as you can see she is the centre of attention.

6. THERE ARE OFTEN INTERTEXTUAL REFERENCE

This where a music video shows images from other media products such as films or music videos and TV programmes. An example of this is all the small things by Blink 182 who make fun out of Back Street boys I want it that way.
