• What’s the big deal about making a bed?

Patient comfort• Beds must be free from wrinkles. Why?

LINEN

• In order from bottom to top:• Pillowcase• Bedspread (this is not a comforter)• Blanket prn• Sheet• Draw Sheet (What is this? And Why?)• Flat sheet• Mattress Pad

Some things to remember with bed making

• Use good body mechanics• Use infection control precautions• Keep linen wrinkle free with minimal touching• Miter corners• Place draw sheet 14-16 inches from head of

bed• Utilize other devices such as fleece pads, or

Chux• Pillowcase with opening away from door.

MITERED CORNERS

• After tucking in sheet at top or foot of mattress, pick up the sheet about 12 inches from the head or foot of the bed.

• Form a triangle with a 45 degree angle on top of the mattress.

• Tuck the lower portion under the mattress.• Hold the fold with one hand and bring the

triangle down with the other hand.• Tuck the folded part under the mattress.

Bed making with a patient inside? For Real?

Special things to remember:

Keep patient covered with bath blanket.

Caution patient when turning over roll of linen.

Side Rails up on side you are not working.

Make a toe pleat.

Recovery Bed What & Why?

NOTICE ALL THE LINEN IS FAN FOLDED TO THE BEDSIDE OPPOSITE THE DOOR!!

POST OPERATIVE UNIT

• Make Recovery Bed with extra Chux or draw sheets. And pillow at headboard.

• Clear furniture out of way• Place cuffed bag on siderail• Emesis basin, tissues near• VS equipment near• IV pole and pump• Follow Doctors orders regarding equipment
