BRAND IDENTITY

Page 3: Brand identity

One way of recognising the psychographics of the punk genre is by noting what the Sex Pistols advertise. For example, there are many concert posters advertising them playing alongside other punk bands. The typical thing to do at a concert of the punk genre is to dance about in an aggressive manner, called ‘moshing’. This is a rather violent act and can be rather dangerous, so it shows that the audience aren’t concerned about their safety.

Conventionally, these posters are usually highly busy, with a reoccurring font throughout the poster, so it looks appealing on the eye.

Punk bands can be identified as ‘hardcore’ performers, who are interested in playing to an audience as aggressive as them.

One way of noticing brand identity is the use of low- key lighting. If the music video is set in a performance area for a concert, the lighting will be low- key, as it creates the atmosphere required to have a successful performance.

How These Products Relate to the Punk Genre

The image has low saturation, giving it a more bold and old- fashioned look. The content is aggressive, as a man is in the process of destroying his guitar. It also gives a sense of carelessness, and a rejection of consequences, demonstrating the anger and the youth of the audience. The album name contains very contrasting colours. It relates to their band name; ‘The Clash’, and it demonstrates how bold the genre is. It is also used to draw attention to the name of the album.

It relates to the music video, as the video has a similar visual effect. The actions in the video relate to the image, as when they are playing their instruments, they do it in a rather aggressive and enthusiastic manner. The name of the album; ‘London Calling’, is a statement linking to World War 2. So the image of the album cover is a response to that, as are the lyrics and actions in the music video.
