1) LENGTHThe first element I needed to consider when choosing my track was the length of it. I did not want anything longer than 4 minutes or shorter than 2 minutes. The reason for this was because if the song was too long I would have to do a lot of filming in order to produce a successful music video. With the set time frame, I knew I had to set myself something a target which was realistic and achievable. The lengths of my three possible songs are listed below:

More Than A Woman – 3:44Like A Boy – 3:58

3:16AM -3:16

Essentially, out of my three songs, 3:16AM had the length which seemed most suitable which is the first reason I chose to use this song.

2) THEME & LYRICS

The second thing I took into consideration was what the song was actually about. This was vital as it was going to be difficult to make a music video to a song I had no understanding of.

MORE THAN A WOMAN: This song focuses on the gender roles and representations in society. Aaliyah is simply challenging them by stating that she can be ‘More than a woman’. Fundamentally, I did like the concept of this song because I personally do not appreciate the gender representations which exist in society, as to me they are outdated and somewhat false.

LIKE A BOY: Essentially, this song also focuses on the existing gender roles however; this song is directed more at gender roles within relationships. Summing it up, it’s about Ciara questioning how a male would feel if a female acted the way he did.

3:16AM:Unlike the other two songs, this song is based on love and the harmful effect it can have on a female. It supports the general stereotype that females are usually hurt more after a relationship goes wrong. Even though I do not agree with this idea, the song also looks at psychological effects such as insomnia and psychosis which makes it different from the typical break-up songs.

Ultimately, I chose 3:16AM because the ideas portrayed in the song are not usual and I feel I can make a music video which best represents these ideas in comparison to the other two songs.

3) ARTIST POPULARITY

AALIYAH:Aaliyah was very popular throughout the 90s with her 2nd album ‘One in a Million’ selling 3.7 millions copies in the US and over 8 million copies worldwide. However, sadly in 2001 Aaliyah died in a plane crash. Ultimately, I did not want to produce a music video to an Aaliyah song because she was the ‘Princess of R&B’.

CIARA:Ciara is a worldwide R&B artist who is highly noticed for her ability to dance. She released her debut album ‘Goodies’ in 2004 which was certified triple platinum by the RIAA and earned her four nominations at the 48th Grammy Awards. I believe that If I make a music video to a song by Ciara my audience will expect too much from me because of her music status.

JHENE AIKO:Jhene has yet to release a debut album and is not so popular as she was only signed to Artium records in 2012 after the release of her mixtape ‘Sailing Souls’. She is well known by the younger generation because she releases most of her songs on the internet which is dominated by teenagers and young adults. This is the reason I decided to choose Jhene Aiko.

4) ACHIEVEAB

LE?

More than a woman and Like a boy both have a fast tempo, which is perfect for choreography. However, because I am making this music video by myself, I will not have the time to make up dance routines and find dancers who can learn, practice and perform it which is why I did not choose either of these songs. On the other hand, 3:16AM has a slower tempo which will allow the viewer to focus more on the lyrical content rather than the performance happening in the video. This also gives me more time to think about the Mise en scene and various effects I might consider using.

CONCLUSION…Overall, I decided to choose 3:16AM

because of the various psychological concepts it portrays. I like the fact that

it’s not a typical love song about heartbreak but it takes this a step further. I was also persuaded to

choose this song because of the time frame I have. As they say quality is

better than quantity, so because the video will not consist of time consuming elements such as

choreography, I will have more time to edit my music video to a suitable

standard.
