About the exhibition

• The Idea ………..

Page 7: Cultural Connections

The Queensland Local Government Reform has been a contentious issue this year.On 27 July 2007, an Independent Local Government Reform Commission provided itsrecommendations to the Queensland Government on the name, class, boundary and electoralarrangements for the new local government areas in Queensland. The Queensland Governmentaccepted the independent Commission’s boundary recommendations, which reduced the number ofcouncils in Queensland from 157 to 73. These changes are now law and take affect for the next localgovernment elections on 15 March 2008. The Murilla Shire will amalgamate with Tara, Chinchilla andWambo Shires, Dalby Town and Division 2 of Taroom Shire (Wandoan area).

So what does this mean for cultural development in our region? Can we protect local character andbuild a shared identity?

Studies have found that ‘cultural activities bring communities together, help residents build meaningfulrelationships and develop talent, inject funds into the economy and importantly, give communities anidentity’.

This exhibition includes Shire profiles and showcases Council collections and cultural organisationsfrom six areas which will soon be governed by one regional Council.Visualising a movement toward the future and a new regional partnership this exhibition aims topresent opportunities that could arise from our cultural connections and help visitors learn about theidentity of the Shires we will be joining.
