Director Case Study
Samuel BayerBy Gemma Whitehead
Sam Bayer has directed commercials, films and a wide variety of music videos. He is not a fan of shooting digitally as he made it into the industry without all the electronic equipment we have today.
Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit Ramones - Poison Heart Melissa Etheridge - Come To My Window
David Bowie - Hearts filthy lesson Tears for fears - Elemental
Sheryl Crow - Home
The Rolling Stones - Anybody Seen My Baby
LL Cool J - FatherRobbie Williams-Angels
These are all videos by Sam Bayer from the 1990’s these nine are my favourite style of his videos from the 90’s.
Blink 182 – Stay together for the kidsMarilyn Manson – "Disposable Teens"
These videos are his more recent ones. Sam Bayer is very mainstream with his rock videos but does try to make them stand out by being very unusual so you could argue he is not main stream. Many band and artists admire him for his work with big bands such ad Green Day and Blink 182 as their videos are recognised all over the world.
I think that the director Samuel Bayer who has made some of the most iconic videos, really captures the bands ideas as well as his own to create this
extravagant music video. I really admire how music videos of today are more about telling a story rather than just on a stage performing to an audience with close up shots. The use of a macro lens enhances the blur effect and I really like the slow motion used within this video, its at just the right times. The band also designed the costumes themselves which I think clearly shows their individuality
and the fact that they want to be different and extreme.
