In India, the land of cultural diversity, the pan Indian festival “Diwali” is celebrated in different way in various parts of India for various different reasons. That is it enchanting beauty of India, the festival remains same in some aspects at the same time vary from region to region in certain other aspects. Though the origin of Diwali cannot traced, several unique legends regarding the reason for celebrating Diwali do exist. In the northern and western India, such as UP, Delhi, etc the celebration of Diwali is attributed to the return of the Lord Ram to his kingdom after defeating the demon king Ravana. In Andhra Pradesh, the two main days of the Diwali are Naraka Chathurdasi and Diwali Amavashya. The people of Andhra Pradesh gift sweets to their friends and relation on the occasion of the Diwali and they celebrated Diwali as the victory festival of Lord Krishna and his consort over the evil demon “Narakasura”. The house are made clean and white washed , decorated by lighting diyas on the evening of the Diwali days. The “Hari Katha” Stage dramas are held, dummy Narakasura are burnt by firing firecrackers by the people dressed up as Krishna and his consort Sathyabhama. The Goa and Konkan people attribute the Diwali celebration to the same reason and on Diwali day, the paper made effigies are burnt down early in the morning and the men are welcomed into the house with aarathi , the men crush a bitter fruit called “Kaareet” under the feet, symbolizing killing of Narakasur, removal of evil and ignorance. The houses are decorated with mango leave, lamps , marigold flowers and various kinds of sweets are exchanged. Whereas, the Diwali is the festive occasion for the Bengali people to worship the Goddess kali in form of ten days long “Durga Pooja” or “Kali Pooja”. In Gujarat, the Diwali celebration is significantly unique as it celebrated during the “Krishna Paksha and Shukla Paksha”. The celebration begins on the eleventh day of the Krishna Paksha of Aaso month and last upto fifth day of the karthi month. The different names are given for each day of the celebration, Vaagh Baras is the festival for the cow and the calf. Dhanteras (The actual Diwali day), Kali Choudhas(Known as choti Diwali in other parts of India), Lashmi pooja (Goddess Lakshmi is worship and invited to the house by lighting up the diyas), Bestu Baarsh (The new year day for Gujarathi peoples), Bhai NIj (last day of Diwali), and Labh Pancham (An auspicious day to commence any noble venture). In Karnataka, The Diwali is celebrated for three days, the first day is called “Neeru Thumoo Habbha” during which the house are cleaned andmade ready for the Diwali. On the second day, The Narak Chathudasi, the ritual of “Tailabhyaanjaana” is followed, the people wake up early in the morning and take bath early in the morning. Deepavali- Pan Indian Festival

In India, the land of cultural diversity, the pan Indian festival “Diwali” is celebrated in different way in various parts of India for various different reasons.

Enchanting beauty of India is that the festival remains same in some aspects at the same time vary from region to region in certain other aspects.

Deepavali in Gujarat region

In Gujarat, the Diwali celebration is significantly unique as it celebrated during the “Krishna Paksha and Shukla Paksha”. The celebration begins on the eleventh day of the Krishna Paksha of Aaso month and last upto fifth day of the karthi month.

The different names are given for each day of the celebration:

Celebrations around Karnataka regions

In Karnataka, The Diwali is celebrated for three days, the first day is called “Neeru Thumoo Habbha” during which the house are cleaned and made ready for the Diwali.

On the second day, The Narak Chathudasi, the ritual of “Tailabhyaanjaana” is followed, the people wake up early in the morning and take bath early in the morning. The second day celebration is attributed to the victory of Lord Krishna and Sathyabhama over the evil demon Narakasura.

The Third is the “Bali Padhami”, The people light up diyas to invite the greatest emperor “The Bali Chakravarthi” to each and everyone’s home.

Celebrations at Kerala, Punjab & Maharashtra

The Diwali is not celebrated by the native people of Kerala, The Diwali is celebrated only in region where majority of Tamil and Bengali peoples reside in Kerala.

In Punjab, the next day of Diwali is known as “Tikka”, on this day sisters make a paste of saffron and rice and put a tilak on their brother’s head to ward off all the harms.

In Maharastra, the Diwali is celebrated to get the blessing of the god of death, “The Yama”. The people pray for a long life by lighting up the lamps in the direction of the south, mythological direction for the god yama.

Thala Deepavali- an unique custom

In Tamil Nadu, The first Diwali after the marriage is celebrated as “The Thala Deepavali” by the newly married couples.

On this day the bride’s parents, give feast for the bridegroom, shower him with gifts and bless the couples for Long happy married life.

The custom of “The Thala Deepavali” is unique to the state of Tamil nadu.

An unifying festival

Though the Indian people celebrate the Diwali festival for different reason in different regions of India, the Diwali have evolved as a unifying festival of the nation.

Diwali festival is the greatest example of the unique “Unity in diversity” culture of India.
