Percussion instrument is a musical instrument that is sounded by being struck or scraped by a beater (including attached

enclosed beaters or rattles); or

struck, scraped or rubbed by hand; or struck against another similar instrument.

The percussion family is believed to include the oldest musical instruments.

In Indian subcontinent, basically membranophones have been using commonly as percussions in different musical schools since very early civilization with an on-going development of instruments till date.

Mridangam

The Mr̥5idaṅgaṃ is a percussion instrument from India of ancient origin. It is the primary rhythmic accompaniment in a Carnatic music ensemble.

Pakhawaj

The Pakhawaj is an Indian barrel-shaped, two-headed drum, the standard percussion instrument in the Dhrupada style. The Pakhawaj has a low, mellow tone, very rich in harmonics.

Sri Khol

The khol or Sri-Khol is a terracotta two-sided drum used in northern and eastern India for accompaniment with devotional music (bhakti).

Dholak

The Dholak is a South Asian two-headed hand-drum. It may have traditional cotton rope lacing, screw-turnbuckle tensioning or both combined

Nagara

Nagara or Naqqara are also found in India, this instrument is usually used to accompany the shehnai or "Indian oboe", an indispensable component of any North Indian wedding.

ChandeThe Chande is a drum used in the traditional and classical music of South India and particularly in Yakshagana theatre art of Karnataka. It follows the Yakshagana Tala system.

Thavil

Thavil is a barrel shaped drum from Tamil Nadu. It is used in temple, folk and Carnatic music, often accompanying the nadaswaram.

Tabla

The tabla is a percussion instrument. Tabla often used in Hindustani classical music and in traditional music of India.

It is claimed that the term tabla is derived from an Arabic word, tabl, which simply means "drum”.
