Evaluation – Question 1

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and

conventions of real products?

1 Set in a house, two characters getting ready in the bathroom and bedroom

Male character is more laid back and in casual clothing, whilst on the laptop

Female character is wearing more dressy clothes, she looks more like she is going to a party and is clearly spending more time on herself than the male character.

2Dark and secluded setting

Quiet and secretive location, all that can be seen is an outline of the figure, with only a few street lights in the distance. No cars are around, no people are out.

The only costume visible is the dark hoodie the character appears to be wearing.

Medium shot.

Another main character is established.

Darkness and figure outline creates mystery. Where is the character going? Why is there no else out at this time?

4Another shot of the character walking, however, in this shot it’s the front of the character. Face is covered by a scarf and hair is covered by the hood. Adds mystery and suspense to the shot.

Footsteps sound effect used, emphasizes the silence surrounding the character.

Setting of this part is a bridge, which the character is wondering across.

5Setting is on a quiet road. This car is the only car which is visible and the only car that had been out driving at that time.

Character in hoodie is laying face flat on the floor, clear sign that he or she has been knocked over by the car, in which the driver had previously been taking drugs.

Headlights are on, why didn’t the character see the car coming? Footsteps could be heard in the previous scene, emphasizing the silence. Why didn’t the character hear the car coming?

Female character looks quite panicked. She is clearly shocked and can’t believe what has just happened. Male character is

pointing to the boot, suggesting to put he or she into it.

Middle shot used.

This shot shows the car driving off again down the quiet, dark road. Are they going to the hospital or are they going to the party?

No characters are visible. Creates questions for the audience. Who got into the car? What did they do with the knocked over character?

The confusion and questions adds to the elements of a good thriller.

8Close up shot used.

Two male characters are walking outside of the house, presumably after the party they attended. Creates

tension and suspense for the audience. Will the character still be in the boot? Has anyone found out about what they’ve done?

The light from the house is contrasting with the darkness outside, they have to step back into reality and face up to the damage they have caused.

9Over the shoulder shot used.

Final shot of the opening of the thriller. A hooded character can be seen, watching the two male characters from a distance as they open the boot and discover that the “dead” character has disappeared.

Heartbeat sound effect is used, adds to the tension and suspense. The character is planning revenge.

Dark and fuzzy camera shot, the fuzziness emphasizes their confusion and the darkness emphasizes them realising what they have actually done.
