Indian Architecture
IF ALL OF THE WORLD´S CULTURAL HERITAGE (SPORTS, MUSIC, FASHION, ARCHITECTURE, LITERATURE, PAINTING, ETC..) WAS CONTAINED IN A TIME CAPSULE, WHAT WOULD YOU INCLUDE TO DEMONSTRATE THE LEGACY OF YOUR COUNTRY?
Influence of different religions on Indian Architecture
The Indian architecture can’t be distinguished by mentioning India. The architectural examples in India are influenced by various religions and can be categorised by mentioning religions. Since India is a home of five major religions, the buildings in India are basically:
Influenced by Hinduism
Influenced by Buddhism
Influenced by Muslims
Influenced by Christianity
Influenced by Sikhism
Hindu Architecture in India
Among the most prominent Hindu Architectures in India are:
Thanjavur Temple Khajuraho Temple
Muslim Architecture in India
Among the most prominent of the Muslim architectures in India is the Taj Mahal.
It was built by 22,000 workers during 22 years under the rule of Shahjahan.
Taj Mahal, the symbol was love, was built for the memories of Shah Jahan’s wife Mumtaj.
Muslim Architecture in India Muslims constitute 28.3% of India’s 1.23 billion people and form the second
largest community in India.
Apart from Taj Mahal, other prominent Muslim buildings are:
Humayun Tomb Red Fort
Buddhist Architecture in India Even though Buddhism doesn’t has the same number of
followers in India as does Hinduism or Muslim do, it was founded by Lord Gautam Buddh here in India.
Among the most prominent buildings here in India that showcase Buddhist architecture in India, the most important are:
Sarnath Temple Sanchi Stupa
Christian Architecture in India After Hindus and Muslims, Christians constitute the third largest
community in India. Since India was under the rule of British for over 200 years, we can easily see the influence of the British in India.
Pattumala church (Kerala) Victoria Memorial (Kolkata)
Sikh Architecture in India Sikhism is a religion basically followed in the northern Indian state of Punjab and
forms the fourth largest community in India.
Though there are not many Sikh architectures, still the Sikh boast of the most prominent temple that describes the Indian architecture-The Golden Temple, made completely of gold.
On the end note, I would like to mention that Indian architecture is influenced by various religions in India and if it were required to carry a legacy that I would like to carry from my country in a time capsule, it would be the Indian architecture.
