Dedication and long hours paid off for the Warren Cen-tral High School indoor percussion and the Warren Central Junior High School winter guard.

The WCHS indoor per-cussion won second place at the Mississippi Indoor State Competition in Jack-son March 31, then placed third at a regional com-petition, while the newly formed WCJH winter guard won second place in the state competition, said WCHS band director Alan Arendale.

“It is a big deal to win third place in the regional compe-tition,” Arendale said, “The competition encompasses the whole southeastern por-tion of the United States.”

The group of indoor per-cussionists will be recog-nized by the Vicksburg Warren School Board Thursday for their achieve-ments this season.

“We weren’t looking to win,” said Will Everett, a 17-year-old senior in the per-cussion group, “We were looking to be the group that everyone wanted to see.”

Everett is the son of Marie Hartley and Glenn Hartley and said the indoor percus-sion group practices twice a week for three hours.

The group’s theme this year was Generation Next. They entertained the crowd with a theatrical perfor-mance complete with drums, electronics, melodic percussion instruments, bells and xylophones, Aren-dale said.

Rachel Green, also a senior member of the per-cussion group, said that the color scheme of the group was black and purple and

the theme incorporated the sounds and visuals of “How we are the future.”

Green is the daughter of Ron and Sharon Green.

Arendale said the percus-sion group performed on a large piece of vinyl covering the gym floor and printed with graphics.

Chad Austin, the group’s leader said their perfor-mances included two com-munity shows, entertain-ment for the student body, four state competitions and the one regional event.

Everett likened the percus-sion group to a family and said he looked forward to practice every day. While Green said she enjoyed the Indoor Percussion group because unlike regular band, this group had a less formal atmosphere.

“We are allowed to talk more because it’s not during school and it’s all about fun,” she said.

According to Arendale the state now recognizes band as an advanced physi-cal education credit for high school students.

“If you’re not good at sports,” Everett said, “you can be in the band.”

The junior high winter guard took the second place win at the state competi-tion after only three months of practicing as a group Arendale said, adding that the group performs cho-reographed flag routines to

taped music“They practiced four hours

a week after school and on some weeks they practiced for six hours,” he said.

The winter guard is led by Jace McMullin and Melynn Arendale and is comprised

of 10 members.Arendale said indoor per-

cussion and the winter guard competitions began in the late 1970s for the pur-pose of maintaining march-ing and performing skills.

Warren Central students shine at indoor competitions

Art students earn blue ribbons from Vicksburg Art AssociationBy Pamela [email protected]

Ribbons were handed out April 15 to winners of the 2011 Vicksburg Art Associa-tion Youth Art Show.

About 90 local high school students submitted art pieces for the contest, in forms including pencil, watercolor, pastels, mixed media and three-dimensional ceramics and sculptures.

First place awards were earned by nine different stu-dents from Warren Central and Vicksburg high schools, with Damond Anderson, 16, a WCHS ninth-grader taking Best of Show for his water-color painting called “War Zone.”

Brandi Waldrop, a WCHS junior, took first in three dif-ferent categories — pastels, mixed media and sculpture. Seconds, thirds and hon-orable mentions were also awarded.

“There’s a lot of incredible talent in Warren County, and not only among the students but also the amazingly dedi-cated and talented teachers who helped put this show together,” VAA president Corin Morrison said.

WCHS art teacher Jaime Coon, who chaired the com-mittee of teachers who selected and organized stu-dent work for contest sub-mission, said students could enter five to six pieces, all required to have been cre-

ated in art classes during this school year.

Coon said the teachers were pleased with what was produced.

“A lot of the students are beginners, so this might be their first attempt at entering a show,” she said.

About 40 VHS students and 50 WCHS students, plus one student from Porters Chapel Academy and one student who is home-schooled sub-mitted contest entries, Coon said.

The show, which drew more than 180 art pieces, was open to all seventh- through 12th-grade students in Warren County.
