Music Magazine
Audience Research
Survey – Result Analysis
By Hannah Penton
Concluding from the results of the first question the target audience that I will most likely base my magazine towards are those aged around 18 and 19, because
those were the resounding majority who completed the survey.
The basis of these results show that I will be aiming towards the female majority, when considering the concept of my music magazine. However I will still need to
consider the male minority that answered the survey, so I can appeal to them as well and provided them with a magazine that they would be willing to read.
The greater part of people only read/ buy magazines a few times a year which might suggest that people don’t tend to ‘buy’ magazines that often any more, so perhaps I
should think about making the music magazine available to read online.
Going by the following highest answer of ‘few times a month’ – I could consider making the magazine a every other month issue. This may well keep people interested
to continually read the magazine on a monthly basis.
In addition to the above answers the option for the audience to give their own
opinion if there are any other musical genres that they prefer.
The pie chart here shows other percentages of additional responses – the
other most popular was Dubstep.
The above table shows the results of my forth
question, It shows those music genres that people find most interesting. I
will use the top genres as the origin of what type of
music I will use in the magazine I’ll later
produce.
The results show that the people prefer Pop/Rock
as the most popular genre followed by Indie.
Unfortunately most people have specified that they don’t
actually tend to read music magazines, so I will have to use the next popular answer.
The reason for this question is that I will take inspiration from the most prevalent
response, and take ideas from it and see how the layout and styling's make it attractive to
individuals.
The magazine I will take preference to shall be Rolling
Stones.
Here shows the other responses of additional music magazines that the
respondents tend to read.
None of those listed have the majority over ‘Rolling Stone’ magazine so they won’t effect the overall conclusion of this question. But the most common
additional response is NME.
This next question outlines what colour scheme that I will use as the house style for the upcoming music magazine.
With 27% I shall use the mass vote and incorporate a mix of monochrome (meaning black and white) and colour.I feel like this could create a modern, contemporary look for the music magazine, furthermore as I will be using
colour I've seen that out of the options for either bright or bold colours; bold had a bigger response, therefore when using colour along with monochrome, I will aim for bold colours to suit the needs of the audience.
Reasoning for the question is that I need to get an idea of what people look for in magazines that attract them to pick
it up and buy or read them.
The findings have shown that to keep consumers attentive they see Vouchers as an eye-catching feature. More so
they would also like to see Exclusive Interviews! I will try to incorporate these ideas into my magazine.
Other features respondents have proposed that they would like to see in a magazine to attract them are shown in the following table. In my opinion, the need for ‘well
known cover artists’ is very important as this is will attract
customers to stop and look at it.
The magazines layout is an extremely important factor I need to consider when designing my magazine, if I want to appeal to a specific audience and
keep them interested I need to know what makes them do so.
After asking I established that the people I wish entice prefer an equal amount of images and text.
“Any thing that isn't worn by everyone and 14 year old girls such
as Hollister, Superdry and A&F. Brands like Pretty Green, Ralph Lauren, Calvin
Klein, Diesel, Hugo Boss, Armani, Replay, Franklin and Marshall are better examples of real quality
brands! These are much more durable than brands such as Hollister and
Superdry, as I have found out at my cost. Don't encourage people to buy into these poorly made products!”
This is a detailed feedback from a potential buyer, however this response isn’t representative of my target audience, they are most likely to be unable to afford these high end brands. However I will take into consideration of their comment and
incorporate their suggestions into my reader profile.
Findings show that ‘New Look’ and ‘Topshop/Topman’ are the most popular with
respondents. These branding I know are high quality and
affordable for my current target audience (Question1) I will be able to use these type brands when trying to advertise inside my magazine, this will hopefully tempt to new buyers because they can associate with this
type of branding. Other suggestions show that they like River
Island in particular.
For those artists that I wish to feature in my magazine I am hesitant of what particular area I need to research to acquire a variety of music to allure new readers.
The consensus out of the options given were that people would like to hear about artists and music internationally. Hence I will need to do research on international artists that are in the genre of Pop/Rock – since this is was concluded from question 4, I can also
take insight from magazines like Rolling Stone (question 5)
These survey results will help me create a reader profile for my
magazine as it provides me with idealistic ideas
that people have answered.
