Guns, Knives and... Roses? – Making music to heal the wounds of a grieving community
On the warm evening of 6th of June around 60 people gathered around barbeque and stage at the Showcase Lounge, at Scream Studios on North end to experience a veritable feast of cool grooves and musical appreciation. Terra Firma, a recently setup Croydonian live events company, was hosting its first musical show. The venue is next to the site of the fatal stabbing of Oliver Kingonzila, in September 2008. The aim of the evening was to raise money for the cause of combating knife crime, and generating awareness of music as an alternative. Terra Firma had worked closely in conjunction with Croydon Voluntary Action and the local music scene to provide an enjoyable and worthwhile evening to attendees Pledging their musical services free that night was a plethora of our local talent including;
• Rising Sons; an international rap duet made up in one part of an globetrotting Dutch music devotee, and in the other the legitimate but disinherited heir to the tribal lands of an area in Nigeria.
• Skarab, Croydon’s very own ‘not-‐quite-‐reggae band’ ; Skarab were most recently seen playing at the Clocktower for Testing 123, and where remembered for their surprisingly refreshing rendition of Oasis’ Wonderwall
• Kasha; a hip hop artist delivering a positive message, embarking on a lengthy local tour. Kasha already is a patron of 2 anti knife crime charities and has been described as Richard Blackwood as a “...celebrity in the making”
The night was a great success, raising much-‐needed funds for Lives Not Knives, a charity devoted to educating and inspiring vulnerable youth groups. The charity works in a number of proactive ways, which includes public outreach in schools. Jack, one of the event organizers and Skarab’s bass player, is a Croydon Ambassador, and takes his role promoting Croydon’s arts and music seriously.
Concern over the rise in knife and gun crime saw traffic brought to a standstill in London on 2008 when more than 2,000 people marched in protest at the use of knives by young people. Terra Firma hopes that their work, combined with other enterprising groups in the London area will help encourage troubled youth find music as an alternative to gang association. This is the first event Terra Firma has organized, but the group is already planning its next event at to raise money for Ruskin House; ‘One Giant leap’. This will be on the 23rd of June, and will be part of the celebrations of the 40th anniversary of the moon landing. ##Ends## Notes to editors 1.
