Who were your target audience?

Jenna and I decided that our target audience would be teenagers like ourselves. We chose them because we as teens know what we want from a brand/ artist.

Our artist is an attractive and rebellious young woman who we believed teens like our selves would be attracted to as well as aspire to be like her. Our music video itself is very reminiscent of what a typical eighteen year old like us does on a weekend, which is most likely going out and having a good time with our friends. The way our artist dresses also appeals to our audience since during the day she wears very casual laid back clothing (tshirt and shorts) and at night when she’s ready to go out she gets all dressed up (dress, high heels hair and make up done up).

The branding of our artist is also is important to our target audience since many teenagers like a musician not only because of their music but because of the way they dress. For example a more laid back girl would generally like a singer like Lana Del Rey, where as a more glamorous girl would be attracted to the style of Katy Perry.

In the end we decided on a brand image that was similar to that of other artist so that we could establish a following of fans that were used to her style.

Target audience research

According to Young and Rubicam’s Cross-cultural Consumer Characteristics there are four categories of audience;

Mainstreamers: they make up to forty per cent of the market.

Aspirers: they are people who are driven and motivated by status.

Succeeders: people who have already climbed the ladder and just want to keep control of their status.

Reformers: the group who want the world to be a better place.

Our target audience is the mainstreamers. Since pop and grime are already well known and popular genres mainstreamers who are happily willing to conform will be drawn to our artist.

Audience feedback

In order to get our audience feedback we screened our music video in front of our class, which was basically the same as our target audience. We then asked them to fill out a questionnaire for constructive criticism.

Although I believed that our music video went quite well there were a few of our peers who believed otherwise.

For example when asked whether they thought the pace of the music video matched that of the song nearly all the class said yes while a certain few believed that it did not.

Many of our audience though did enjoy certain aspects of our music video. When we asked them what elements they enjoyed the feedback showed that though their answers varied they did on a whole clearly enjoy our work.

How ever there were some who still thought that changes could be made to make our work better. Which of course is entirely understandable

Conclusion

On the whole I believed that our class mates provided us with some sound feedback. Although at times it felt that they were just being petty since half of their comments revolved around the lip syncing being “off” or there not being enough out fit changes or backing dancers.

We took the lip syncing into consideration and fixed that straight away. Though our audience themselves failed to understand that backing dancers and flashy out fits did not tie into to our artists brand image of Urban, Down to earth, pop. Though pop is her subgenre it is not dominating her image.
