QUESTIONNAIRE
ANALYSIS…
The answers provided in the questionnaire will help me in deciding what features I will
include that will appeal to an audience but still stick to basic key conventions of each
advertising product.
QUESTION 1:DO YOU WATCH FILM TRAILERS/ADVERTISEMENTS BEFORE GOING TO SEE
THE FILM?
This question allowed me to get a rough understanding of
the amount of people that watch film trailers. The results
show that people do watch them, either on websites like
YouTube or on Television, to receive more information
about a film they have been told/heard about.
Some people may watch a film trailer before going to see
a film to give themselves a rough idea about the story etc.
of the film they may go and watch.
QUESTION 2:WOULD YOU SAY A TRAILER MAKES YOU MORE INCLINED TO WATCH THE
FILM?
This question allowed me to get a good understanding
on the importance of film trailers. The results show that
a trailer has a large impact in encouraging an
audience member to see a film.
A trailer has to ensure it advertises the film the best in
order for people to be interested in the film. It needs to
provide the audience with the right amount of
information and not give too much away. From
conversations about films I have noticed that a couple
of times people have watched a trailer thinking the film
will be really good, but when they watch the film they
are disappointed as the trailer gave too much away.
QUESTION 3:DO YOU THINK MUSIC IS IMPORTANT IN A TRAILER?
Everyone, apart from a single person, who took
the survey chose the option that music was
important in a trailer.
From this response I know that I need to be
precise in the music I use and ensure it
produces the right atmosphere and I use the
best style that the audience would prefer.
QUESTION 4:WHAT STYLES OF MUSIC DO YOU THINK WORK WELL IN A HORROR TRAILER?
Out of the two music pace options, the answers show that the audience
think a slower pace would work better. When researching horror/thriller
trailers I had notice that many of them do use slower pace music, however
this creates a more tense atmosphere which I think works well with this
genre of film. However more people chose the mixture option, that the
music shouldn’t be fixed on a certain pace but should change dependent
on the situation shown. Also when researching I had noticed that even
though some trailers used a large amount of slower paced music, near the
end where there are short, quick shots it is usually combined with faster
paced music to emphasise the speed and makes the audience more
aware and focused on what is going on.
Pretty much all of the responses replied choosing the option of music
without lyrics. I think this is best as small amounts of lyrics could be ok
when there is not a lot going on in the trailer, but when there are key
elements shown the audience may get distracted with the lyrics in the
song rather than having their entire focus on the clip.
The last two options have a 50/50 split. To decide which option to choose
for the final trailer I will produce a list of different music clips that I might
use and when the trailer is being edited I will play the music clips and see
which style then fits in best with the context.
QUESTION 5:WHAT STYLE OF TRAILER DO YOU THINK WORKS WELL?
The preferred option was ‘multiple clips from the film placed
together (more as screen shots not telling the story). I have
seen elements of this in trailers however it has been used
near the end of the trailer where they shown small
fragments of scenes at a very fast pace.
Personally I think the trailer has to give an idea of what the
film is about and briefly giving an idea of the story.
For the final trailer I think I will combine the two top chosen
styles rather then using a single style. I think this would
work well as it will provide the audience with a brief idea of
the story but will be broken up with other scenes to also add
a sense of curiosity to what is being shown.
Out of the two text options most people thought that text
used only at the end works best. The next question relates
to the text more in-depth.
QUESTION 6:TEXT SHOULD BE USED TO:
The responses show that most people think text
should be used only for the title and date
information. This is a key feature used in all trailers
so will be a feature I am going to include.
The added response was that text should be used
as an ‘extra’ to show key words and phrases that
would add to the mystery/ambiance. I have seen
this type of text used in a few trailers typically where
there is no voice over. Where there is a voice over it
has been rare that I have seen text as well. This is
probably so the audience don’t get confused with
what they read to what is being said.
QUESTION 7:HAVE YOU EVER VISITED A FILM WEBSITE?
I asked this question to give a rough idea of the
popularity of film websites. From the results it
shows they are not sites people tend to visit.
I had expected that most people wouldn’t have
visited a film website, and even from personal
experiences I had only ever visited a film website
once or twice before starting this project.
This then links with the next question of features
on a website, as the featured answers wouldn’t
have been specific to film websites but multiple
other websites which may include different key
features which audiences like that I can include
into mine.
QUESTION 8:WHAT FEATURES DO YOU THINK WORK WELL ON A WEBSITE?
This question allowed me to get a brief
understanding of features people think work well on
websites, main ones that will influence my work
heavily include:
-Colourful
-Clear
-Extra clips/pictures
-Music
-Information about the story/characters
-Interactive
-Social network links
-Store
QUESTION 9:WHAT FEATURES DO YOU THINK WORK WELL ON A FILM POSTER?
Similar to the previous question the response
allowed me to know the key features to include on a
poster that an audience would be most attracted to.
The key features that I will include are:
-Large/bold title and release date
-Large picture (some responses say it should be
remember-able/iconic yet others suggested the use
of ‘well-known’ faces)
-The use of quotes/small amounts of text
-Overall needs to be eye catching
