1. Opening Sequences of 3 Films (Romantic Comedy) Coming to
America Friends with Benefits Made of Honor
2. Coming to America The Opening two minutes of Coming to
America follows the codes and conventions of Romantic comedies by
establishing the settings that are used in the film and showing us
where some of the story is set. It tries to build up the audiences
expectation by showing us a palace which could mean that due to the
name of the film Coming to America that the story is first set
somewhere totally different an that the plot transgresses towards
getting to America.Throughout the opening two minutes the audience
aren't really allowed much of a glimpse into the storyline as its
only an establishing shot of the surroundings and the palace
itself. The only idea the audience get is that some sort of
rich/wealthy people are involved within the story lineEstablishing
shot of the palace Sense of As the film opens, we go from the logo
of the Paramount company and the editing of environment and sets
the the frames allows us to go over the mountain and it starts with
the titles from then on mood as well as the music which continue to
go over the establishing shots of the environment. Also the non
plays on the mood alsodigetic musical score, that is used as a
sound bridge because it continues from the company logo into the
opening of the film, is used to create quite a happy, joyful mood.
Also the fact that its a sort of tribal music creates a sense of
the storyline that a rich and wealthy tribal character goes to the
big city of America so in some ways, if the audience thinks, then
they can understand what is happening
3. Friends With Benefits The opening two minutes of Friends
with Benefits does follow the codes of conventions of Romantic
Comedy as it has the stereotypical boy meets girl scenario as well
as the love turning into unrequited love and the story of two
separate characters coming together due to some sort of plot within
the story. The opening starts by both male an female protagonists
on the phone an the replies they are giving each other sounds as if
they are on the phone together but as the opening continues we
realize that they are meeting two different people on dates Due to
the fact that it shows us, as the audience that the two characters
could be on the phone together and then end up not knowing each
other gives off the idea that the plot will possibly bring the two
together. The opening of the film clearly states to its audience
that it is a Romantic Comedy, with the use of a small twist they
accomplish this by showing both main characters, but they are
blissfully unaware of each other.. The beginning foreshadows their
fate intertwining. On the phone to each other looks as if she is on
the phone to Justin TimberlakeThe frequent cutting between the two
shots us that maybe they're on the phone and one is running late
for the date. They end up meeting two completely different
characters which complicates the plot and makes us, as the
audience, to wonder how the two characters wll come to know eac
other
4. No Strings Attached The techniques used are very similar to
Friends with Benefits which suggests that the majority of Romantic
Comedies use similar techniques, as they are the most effective
techniques to get across the message of love. Friends with Benefits
suggests love as undecided and the paths of lovers are to
intertwine during your lives, which is a very similar style as No
Strings Attached, because this also suggests that love can come
across at any moment without your realization and you may not know
it in the beginning. The opening also This establishing shot gives
us an idea allows us to get a sense of environment which can where
it is taking always set the tone/mood place 15 years for the scene
as well as the ago in a lake house musical score in the with a
shack where background sets the mood the party is and goes with the
setting happeningThe opening starts off by giving a time frame.
This allows us to realize that things must've change for the worse
or for the better in present time and we wait to see what has
happened in the pastAll this is effectively brought across to its
audience with the use of Camera Angles such as close ups and over
the shoulder shots These camera angles suggest the emotional state
of the characters by giving you an idea of their facial expressions
and body language. -These techniques are almost like hints, they
hint to their audience of the forthcoming feelings and how the
characters are oblivious to those feelings at that moment; making
the film as realistic as possible, yet leaving that romantic
fantasy most viewers have. Overall i feel as though both of my Rom
Com choices equally show their Romance and their Comedic side with
different techniques yet effective ones with the genre of film they
are; the codes and conventions of these films are significant yet
similar in their own ways.
