Warm up Theory
Objectives
• To describe the physiological and psychological changes achieved during the warm up component.
• To explain the importance of warming up.
• To identify the 3 components of a warm up.
Purpose• The purpose of a warm up is “to prepare”
the body and mind for the exercise to follow.
Physiological Changes
• Mobilises Joints –
synovial fluid lubricates the joints and reduces friction of bones.
• Heart & Circulation -• Gradually increases the heart rate which allows
blood and oxygen to reach the working muscles.• Muscles –
Warms the muscles, makes them pliable and ready to stretch to help prevent injury.
Heart & Circulation
Psychologically
• Focus of the mind on the exercise.
• Prepares the neuromuscular pathways for the work to come.
Specific Warm Up
• Related to a specific activity or sport.
• Rehearsal of the activity - encourages neuromuscular response patterns to help coordinated movements.
• Sports specific – SQUASH
General Warm Up
• Involves rhythmic movements using large muscle groups.
• Non related to activity.
• Appropriate for individuals with no sport or specific fitness goals.
• Useful for preparing for a whole body work out.
