HOW DID I GATHER MY INFORMATION?

I recorded videos with a focus group of people who fitted my target audience. During the interview, they were able to see a copy of both my magazine and poster so that they could study it after every question, this meant they could pick out specific examples of things they liked or didn’t like, meaning the results are more useful for me.

“Do you think the poster fits the conventions of an action thriller product?”

Two out of three of my focus group said that my poster does not fit the conventions of an action thriller. However, Ash thought that this was a positive aspect as it makes it more unique combined with the artistic, alternative themes. What attracted his attention was the colours and the sophisticated editing styles. On the other hand, Jonathon thought that the poster should be more male dominated, as it is not conventional for an action thriller to be based on females, however this is what I intended and therefore it is a positive factor that my audience can actually identify the unconventionality.

In contrast, Aimee thought that the poster was conventional in terms of the editing techniques for example how I followed the route of the eye and included all of the different elements you would expect to see in a poster – the title, the release date, an image, the character listing, etc.

“Do you think my magazine fits the conventions of an action thriller product?”

Much like my poster, Ash and Jonathon agreed once again, stating that the magazine was in fact conventional. Ash thought the photograph was intriguing and enigmatic with a conventional layout. He also thought the fading of the image into the masthead looked professional and that there was nothing to fault. Jonathon’s feedback is similar, he stated that he liked the way the image combined with the masthead, supporting Ash’s comment by saying he’d seen the same effect on professional film magazines such as Empire. On the other hand, Aimee said that she did not think the magazine was conventional, however it stills looks effective with the large masthead and the enticing image.

“What is your favourite part of my poster?”

Ash’s favourite part of my poster was the image and the fading effect of the two combined images, Aimee agreed with this, stating that it looks ‘eerie’ and fits the genre connotations. Ash also liked the bold typography and the colour scheme, must like Jonathon who also liked the colour scheme because it makes it look feminine and unconventional, making it more unique and intriguing for the audience. He particularly liked how the feminine pink contrasts against the dark black, which I included to show the combination of stereotypical teenage girls and dark, evil, acts of violence.

“What is your favourite part of my magazine?”

Again, Ash said the image was his favourite part as he thought it was very effective, as well as the typography. Both Aimee and Jonathon agreed that the image was also their favourite part because they liked the way it blended into the masthead and thought it was conventional.

“What do you think is the weakest part of my poster?”

The weakest parts of my poster appeared to be the very insignificant details that are not usually the main the parts of the poster that attract attention to the audience. Nonetheless, Ash thought that the casting list at the side could’ve been more prominent and possibly placed elsewhere, Jonathon also commented on my use of fonts by stating that the web addresses could’ve been a little bigger. Aimee suggested I include the antagonist in the poster to make it clear there is an outside ’baddie’.

‘What do you think was the weakest part of my magazine?’

Ashley thought my magazine did not follow the route of the eye, however it still looked effective. Aimee supported this by stating that the coverlines are placed in the middle of the page and look rather small, and therefore are not as enticing in contrast with the rest of the magazine. Jonathon pointed out that the red and blue of the ‘Man of Steel’ does not stand out against the background of the magazine which I could’ve improved on there.

HOW DID I GATHER MY INFORMATION?Using the same focus group as I used to create my

other Padlet’s (Oli, Tamara, Abbi, Shanise and Jamie), I asked the same questions as I did on my previous focus group (Ash, Aimee and Jonathon). I did this to ensure I got a wide range of answers to the same questions to make them more reliable, but using the constant focus group allows me to analyze the in-depth responses of a well known individual rather than lesser in-depth answers with a wider range of people. The focus group have also been able to keep track of my progress since they have given feedback at every stage of my production, therefore they have a wider knowledge of my particular intended features and can analyze how well they think I have portrayed them, and how I have progressed.

‘Do you think my poster fits the conventions of an action thriller?’

All of my focus group agreed that my poster was not conventional because it was female dominated. This is positive feedback however, because my intention was for it to be unconventional in the way that it focuses on a group of teenage girls going against the norms of society within the narrative, and also the fact that I go against the norms of the action genre conventions.

‘Do you think my magazine fits the conventions of an action thriller?’

The response to this question was similar as my focus group stated that the actual magazine was conventional although the content did not follow the themes of the conventional action thriller product, which, as stated before, were my intentions.

‘What is your favourite part of my poster?’

The most popular part of my poster appeared to be the montage of the two images which I used as the main photograph on my poster. The colour scheme in general was also a popular feature. Jamie said that he particularly liked my blocking bill because it made it look like a genuine product, this is something that may get missed out as it is not particularly appealing to the audience in attracting them to the feel, but it is an essential feature that appears on conventional film posters.

‘What is your favourite part of my magazine?’

The most popular part of my magazine was the way in which my image overlapped with my masthead. I found this was a regular occurrence during my research of ancillary tasks and so I used it to make my magazine look professional too.

‘What do you think is the weakest part of my poster?’

The weakest part of my poster seemed to vary, three people said that the quality of my photograph wasn’t as good as it could be but due to my limited equipment I was unable to make it HD quality which is what you would usually see in professional products. Tamara pointed out how the websites at the bottom were too small which is the same as what Jonathon said in the interviews. Jamie also said I could’ve used a different font for the masthead.

‘What do you think is the weakest part of my magazine?’

The weakest part of my magazine appeared to be the fact that the colour scheme didn’t match. Abbi also thought that the cluttered layout was unsuccessful, however Shanise contradicts this by stating that this is what she liked about it. Oli and Jamie pointed out that the writing under the coverlines was quite small which is conventional however they were hard to read on my particular product.

HAS MY

PRODUCTI

ON

BEEN SUCCESSFU

L?

The audience feedback from my ancillary task has been relatively positive with one of the main criticisms being that it is unconventional due to the feminine theme. I have taken this as a positive factor though because my product was intended to be unconventional. Due to the fact I based my ancillary task mainly on research that I did on other real-life products, rather than trial and improvement like I did with my trailer, I was unable to improve it again and again. Despite this, my ancillary tasks are successful with only little suggestions of improvements. Overall I have included all of the essential features of a film magazine and a film poster.
