Several states are having Pollinator conferences. This event was in Davenport, Iowa, and represented the first attempt by the Outreach committee to establish connections and add to knowledge. Made contact with a key person, Iris Caldwell of UIC, who co-ordinates the ROW as Habitat Working Group, as well as others. It provided an opportunity to learn about many of the initiatives working to save the monarch, and the various groups involved.

ROW as Habitat Working Group expanded the network of contacts, from a very diverse group of participants, including easement holders, conservation organizations, agencies, cultural institiutions, etc. Key needs identified were education, and need for seeds and plants. Participation informed the planning for the Wiid Things 2017 conference and several presenters for the conference were contacted here. Several members of Chicago Living Corridors were in attendance. .

Regular email notification of meetings and updates, and regular updates of email list. A special mailing to solicit support was assembled, printed and mailed to key people at about 25 organizations/institutions/corporations.

Mapping data - addresses of our respective organizations were converted to lat/long and provided to mapping committee for integration.

Several members of the Executive Committee will participate in a presentation at the November Chicago Wilderness Congress,

The Outreach Committee proposed to shepherd a track at Wild Things 2017. We have put together six sessions, engaged the speakers, supplied titles and content, and all were submited by the October 5 deadline. Registration will open in November. The list of topics follows.12

Mapping session will have two speakers. Dave Holman will talk about I-View and show how Chicago Living Corridors is creating connections. Dennis Dreher will present on Green Infrastructure mapping in McHenry County.

A panel of representatives from three nurseries selling native seed and plants will discuss: Producers dilemmas: the business risk of producing too much or too little and Are Nativars part of the solution. Grace Koehler, Pizzo and Associates; Kaitlyn OConnor, Prairie Moon Nursery; and Jan Sorenson, Wasco Nursery.

Current Corridor Initiatives Participants will describe various contributions to corridor establishment: Iris Caldwell of UIC present on ROW as Habitat;(easement and other plantings) Carol Rice of Wildflower Preservation and Propagation Committee (mentoring program), Betsy Leibson, Green Bay Trail (working with municipalities) and Jim Kleinwachter of The Conservation Foundation will present info on their Conservation@Home and Conservation@Work Programs.

Burning IssueConservation organizations lack cohesive geographical data of privately owned, unprotected natural areas in the Chicago Region to compliment existing GIS databases of public, protected lands, used for planning

95.9%* of Illinois is private land*summitpost.org

GIS OverviewGeographical Information System (GIS) technology is being used extensively in the Chicago Region for visualization, analysis and planning for primarily public/protected natural areas:Chicago Wilderness with Field Museum Green Infrastructure VisionPrairie State Conservation Coalition I-ViewCornell Labs/ Nature Conservancy - Habitat NetworkNatureServe and the National Geographic Society Landscope

Local conservation groups have begun to collect their own data from private property owner members for measuring impact:The Conservation Foundation, Conservation@HomeWest Cook Wild OnesWildflower Preservation and Propagation CommitteeCitizens for ConservationBarrington Area Conservation Trust, Conservation@Home

Green Infrastructure Vision is a mapping of wetlands, savanna, prairie, woodland, fresh water systemsDescribes ecological services as an interconnected network at all scales, regional level down to the site level

I-View All natural areas protected in the state of Illinois categorized by ownershipServes to support the goal of establishing an interconnected system of Illinois protected natural lands and waters, eg Green Infrastructure Vision initiative.Supports coordination across ownership categories

Criterianatural or restorable to natural condition, (2) permanently protected, and (3) primary purpose as a natural area.

Chicago Living Corridors Prototype

Chicago Living Corridors, has taken initial steps to prototype a GIS database of organizations that have programs to assess and support habitat on private property.

To date six organizations have combined their data on one map, they are organized as separate layers.

Simulated Combination of maps

We have the opportunity now, to view unprotected private land in the aggregate, and combine private natural area data with the rich database resources of other conservation organizations in the area.

Simulated layering of Chicago Living Corridors data over GIV

Next steps is to collect and structure additional site data beyond (lat, long) for analysis; and migrate to ArcGIS Esri.

I am happy to report that we have a Northeastern Illinois University student project team working on an mash-up project that will be completed in December. The team has been tasked to see if they can discover any new insights by combing Chicago Living Corridors data with subsets of GIV and/or I-View data. They will also advise on new data to be collected to enrich the Chicago Living Corridors database.19

The PayoffWhy this is good for youChicago Living Corridors data will be made public and available to layer against other GIS maps to aid in planning.

We are also willing to partner by sourcing additional wildlife habitat data to support conservation efforts in the Chicago area.

criteriaProviding habitat & ecosystem services

How is Habitat Assessed?Habitat is land that supports ecosystem services such as biodiversity soil and water conservation carbon sequestration air quality human benefit

Why are corridors important?Value of habitat increases when it is enlarged and/or contiguous to form a greenway corridor Habitat can beMosaic-- multi-acre tracts Linear--along waterways or rights-of-waysStepping stone-- small parcels in proximity

Our criteria for habitatNative plantsForbs, grasses, sedges, trees, shrubsWater managementRain barrels, rain gardens, erosion contol, water-loving plants, permeable pavement, walkways, lake/stream bufferWildlife habitatSeasonal sources of food for birds, butterflies & other pollinators, nesting sites, water sources, shelter

our Criteria for habitatControl of invasive speciesA good resource for identifying Illinois invasives is http://www.invasive.org/species/list.cfm?id=152Reduce/minimal turf grass lawnRecommended ratio of altered land to native vegetationEarth friendly mantenance practicesComposting, appropriate mulching, minimal pesticides, herbicides
