UK Health Challenges

5.4 million receiving treatment for asthma

Arthritis expected to rise from 8.5 million to 17 million by 2030

Coronary heart disease and stroke are the biggest causes of death

Diabetes expected to rise from 1.4 million in 1996 to over 4 million (a 29% rise)

Physical inactivity contributes to almost 10% of premature deaths

More than half of people aged 16-64 will experience a least one common mental health disorder at some point.

12% of Welsh adults are being treated for mental illness

health disorder at some point.

46% of outdoor recreation visits are within 1 mile of their home

41% of ‘infrequent users stated they would like to do more 32%

Of adults eat five or more portions of fruit of vegetables a day. 58% eat some.

The costs

Physical Inactivity costs the NHS (2009/10) Over £900 million a year

The cost of Mental Heath issues to the UK economy £70-£100 billion a year (4.5% of GDP)

Diabetes alone currently costs the NHS £1.5million an hour

(about 10% of the total budget per annum)
