INTRODUCTION
Environmental community service has always been a staple in any community in
order for humans to live equally and happily together. Community work is referred to
a service of any form of work weather physical work or cash contributions done or
given by any member of the community by his or her own free will in an effort to help
improve the living situations and mental health of the less fortunate in the community.
Within the past few decades the mother earth's natural environment has been
deteriorating due to the abuse caused by humans and their style of living, these
environment problems include air pollution, global warming and the pollution caused
by the non-proper disposal of human trash on the streets, living areas and even water
sources leading to a number of health and environmental issues.
Environmental community service is about helping the less fortunate in the
community while taking care of the environment at the same time. This can be
achieved by using green, sustainable and renewable materials that will not harm the
environment in the making process of the materials such as consuming large amounts
of electricity, producing huge amounts of carbon dioxide CO2 into the earth's
atmosphere and produce large amounts of acid waists that will not be disposed on the
proper and correct way to avoided pollution of the earth's soil and water sources.
Food aid is an organization that helps provide food and shelter for the elderly and
children of all ages who are less fortunate, abundant, orphans or homeless in order to
help them carry out their daily life routines and chores without facing health
difficulties. The objective of this project was to design, construct and distribute a
portable food stall to this organization that will allow them to move the food stall to
their desired location, provide a clean and comfortable seating area for the users while
eating their food while at the same time help reflect a clean, sustainable and
environmental and community friendly organization to the public in order to help
promote and educate the young public about the Food Aid organization to recruit as
much community workers whether young or old as possible.

PROJECT STATEMENT AND OBJECTIVE
The Food Aid Organization:
The charity we have chosen to work with during this project is the Food Aid charity organization. This organization is dedicated to helping those in need by providing homeless, orphans and less fortunate children at the Rumah Charis shelter located in Puchung with food necessary for their daily vitamins and proteins needed for them to grow as healthy as possible avoiding any health problems that may encounter them in the future due to the lac of their daily vitamins and proteins.
Why Did We Chose The Food Aid Organization?:
As a group we have chosen this organization to be a part of our project because it has awoken something in each and every member of the group taking us back to where we use to be kids safe and sound under the protection of our families to then open our eyes and see the reality of innocent children struggling to find food. We took it upon ourselves as young members of the community to provide and give as much as we can in order to make sure that children are well fed as they are the pillar and future of this community making sure they receive their daily needs of proteins and vitamins to grow healthy and strong and to then take their rightful place in growing and developing the community and the country.

The figure above shows the group members with the proposed design of the food stall for the Food Aid Organization at the Rumah Charis in Puchung.
Project Objective:
After meeting with Ms. Ellie the Co. Founder of Food Aid, she has explained to our group the problems they are facing in the organization. One of these problems is the difficulty of moving across the country and providing food without a proper place for the users to sit and have their food and once done dispose of it in the right and proper way, as some of the areas and environments across the country are non-friendly or polluted there for food is consumed while standing then thrown out on the streets by most of the less fortunate people thus after discussing within our group we have decided to build a portable, light weight, functional food stall using sustainable renewable and environmentally friendly materials that will solve all the problems thus allowing Food Aid to reach out to all the communities with the country with ease.

Objectives Of The Food Aid and Rumah Charis Organisations:
To provide a suitable environment for orphans and unprivileged, neglected,
single parent children.
Provide spiritual direction.
Helping the children to continue their education.
Providing counselling and encouragement for those who are emotionally hurt.
To reconcile the children with their parents.
To cultivate good values in this children so that they will be a good citizens
and leader for the nation.
Rumah Charis for children also does some charity events for example recycle for charity campaign, where people around the area can donate their recycled materials such as newspaper, books, magazines, carton boxes, glass bottles, aluminium cans, old clothes, shoes, sofa set, mattresses, computers and a lot more. Some of the materials donated are being re-used back for example clothes, shoes and books. We are amazed with the exposure of teaching about the 3R –reduce, recycle and reuse to the children there at the centre. In a way we are inspired by this future generation of ours as they teach us a lesson and the amazing part is that we didn’t even expecting it. The children here are exposed with all kind of education examples include cooking, where they have a charity dumpling sales, Chinese New year cookies charity sales and mooncake charity sales. During our visit, some of them are even good in sports and musical instrument. We even get the chance to see them practicing for choir for this

coming festival Christmas and it’s a joy to hear this children sing. Most of the children are around 1 to 15 years old. They are exposed to Christianity religion since the founder is Revenant Teo How Ken and most of the staff and advisors are sisters and brothers that are connected to church
Initial Design Progress:
Problem 1:
Provide portable, functional and easy to use food stall.
Solution:
Create a foldable and bendable food stall using sustainable, renewable, environmentally friendly, light weight and durable materials such as wood and PVC pipes that can be folded into a small sized, portable box that can fit into a vehicle of any size and transport the food stall the desired location where it will be removed from the box and assembled on site.
Problem 2:
Provide a clean and comfortable surface or area for the organization to display their food and allow users to sit and eat.
Solution:
Create a bigger surface area by using thin sheets of wood that is east to clean, strong and provide stability. These sheets can be added to increase the surface area of the table as liking depending of the amount of food served and the number of users using the food stall.
Problem 3:
Prevent access waist and / or provide proper waste management solutions rather than dumping the waist on the streets.
Solution:
Building a proper waist box or implementing a method for users to throw their waist that will then be disposed in the right way by members of the organization.

The Final Design:
The material that our group proposed is highly recyclable and most of it can be reuse so we can save more on the environment. Our material consist of reuse wood and plywood, reuse pvc pipes and fitting, nails, sand paper, shellac, screws and metal hinges. The pvc pipes are used as table stand legs. It’s easy to assemble, light, and has a strong tensile strength which is one of the strongest when compared to any plastic. Wood is used as a base to keep the food as wood produce such strength for compression of the weight. Wood is also chosen because its easy to recycle back or reuse it for other purpose
Construction of Final Design:
10 | P a g e
The PVC pipe are used as a stand and footing for the stall is easy to assemble and
dissemble and its light to be carry around. It can also easily be adjust to the height that
is required. A wood base was then added with the correct fit to maintain the balance
for the stall. The wood was also painted for it to be stronger against sun and rain.
11 | P a g e
On Site Instalment:
Installation only takes 1-2 minutes as it is easy to assemble.
12 | P a g e
Additional designs and constructions:
Since the food stall is especially built for the Food Aid Organization distributing their
food at Rumah Charis a special home for children, we have decided to take an interest
and make an effort in improving the educational methods used on site, therefor we
have decided to build and construct a drawing board especially for children to help
them draw, write and hang and share their work with their fellow friends and visitors
of the site. This will also help them reach out to the public with an effort to educate
people about the shelter and the Food Aid Organization. We have also taken the effort
to buy and distribute books to the children that will help them read, write and have
some fun by coloring fun cartoon characters, this is done to promote the importance
of learning and education to children.
13 | P a g e
We have also decided to put the new food stall in use by displaying the food provided
by Food Aide on the food stall for the first time, it was a joyful feeling seeing the look
on the children's faces happy to have a place to eat and display the food.
14 | P a g e
On Site Activities:
Spending time with children, communicating and forming a bond with children is the
best way to leave your mark on them. We have tried to instill the habits of kindness,
friendliness, community service and competitive spirits within the children to grow up
with good Morales so they would then give back to the community when they group
up in the future.

Life Cycle Analysis:
Life Cycle Energy Efficiency Of Materials Used:
What is Life Cycle Assessment? Life cycle assessment is a performance based
approach by designer as an approach to assessing the impacts building materials
choices they have towards the environment. The best way to understand the full
environment impact of any product or structure is to analyse the impacts it has at
every stage of its life including fossil fuel depletion, water used and other non-
renewable resource that being used. This will enable the objective comparison to be
made between alternate materials and assemblies over their lifetime based on
quantifiable indicators of the environment impact. For example why our group choose
wood rather than metal? Wood is better as it can absorb heat better than metal and the
proses of producing wood is better than metal for the environment as metal release a
lot of gases than wood. Life cycle assessment clarifies the environment trade-offs
associated with choosing one material over the other and as a result it will provides us
with an effective basis for comparing alternate design in a specific geographic
location. Designers can make better environmental decision based on using the Life
Cycle Assessment tools to evaluate the environment effect of different products
material.
Life Cycle Of Wood:
Life Cycle Assessment for wood show that wood products yield clears environmental
advantages over other building materials at every stage. Wood buildings can offer
lower greenhouse gas emissions, less air pollution, lower volumes of solid waste and
less ecological resource are used. Fossil fuel consumption is one of the potential
contributions to the greenhouse effect and the quantities of solid waste are minor for
all of the wood products compared to other products like concrete and steel. Wood
products that are already installed and are used in an appropriate way tend to be more
favourable to the environment profile compared to the functionally of other products
material.
16 | P a g e
Comparing Environmental Impact of Wood to other Building Assessable. This graph
compares a typical wood-frame exterior wall with five other alternative building
materials. In terms of environment performance in 3 of the categories that is energy
consumption, climate change and green gas emission (air pollution) it is clearly that
wood product is much way better for the environment.
Solutions For Wasted Wood:
Based on the report of UK Wood Waste Recycling , it stated that wood waste recycle
can provide 30, 40, and 50 cubic yard containers for the removal of the above
material. All materials are recycled. Used for recycled wood. Recycled wood products
are made from post-consumer and post-industrial source. Use as fuel. Waste wood
remains waste until burned as a fuel. Its burning will normally be regulated by an
environmental permit under The Environmental Permitting (England and Wales)
Regulations 2010 (EPR 10) or through the U4 exemption. In addition, burning of
waste wood is normally subject to the requirements of the Waste Incineration
Directive (WID).Use in wood-based panel manufacture. The wood remains waste
until it is made into panelboard. Use in landscape applications. Examples include
weed suppressant, decorative woodchip, pathways and arena chip. Use in animal
bedding. Examples include cattle, horse and pet bedding. Usually wood are used as a
component for formwork at a construction site. The impact it has on the environment
17 | P a g e
is deforestation that will then cause soil erosion, flooding and loss of habitats to some
animal. Deforestation also will cause global warming as the sunlight/daylight will
directly hit the surface of the earth.
Wood Life Cycle Assessment Diagram
Life Cycle Of PVC Pipes:
PVC pipe are made out of chemical process for making PVC involves taking the
simplest unit, called the monomer, and linking these monomer molecules together in
the polymerization process. Long molecular chains are formed called polymers
(which are also called macromolecules). PVC pipe which are made from vinyl
chloride monomer usually known as VCM through polymerization .PVC which are
manufactured from monomers through polymerization are solid and chemically stable
substances therefore will not affect human health.

The image above demonstrates the production process of PVC pipes at the factory.
Energy Efficiency Of PVC Pipes:

19 | P a g e
Energy and Crude oil use for
different material
The table above showed the energy usage for a PVC using crude oil as a raw material.
Steel and aluminum don't use crude oil as raw material, but steel needs coal and
aluminum uses also coal and lots of electrical energy. The amount of crude oil should
not be overemphasized, all plastics in the world do use only 4% of all crude oil, 94%
is directly used for energy, the rest for other purposes. So, if crude oil should only be
used for making plastics, it would be an abundant material. It is quite normal that the
energy and crude oil use of PVC is the lowest, because 57% of PVC comes from salt,
an extremely abundant material on earth. The energy use per ton is not the only point
in total energy use during a lifetime: the amount of material, needed for a certain
application, the type of use and the length of a useful life is important too. Although
aluminum needs much more energy for production, it saves much more energy when
used for e.g. making car motors, because of the lighter weight. That means that you
need less aluminum in weight to make the same motor and lighter cars, which gives
less petrol consumption, thus energy (and pollution) savings during lifetime but for a
standard built-up like furniture it is better to use PVC pipe as it is lighter and energy
saving compared all other plastic categories.

Outcomes And Results:
With the fast installation for the booth which the Food Aid Association that we are
cooperating with is lacking of right now, we are able to distribute food instead of
putting it inside a box or on a floor. The materials that we used are sustainable and
reusable as well and the amount of wood and PVC pipe were design to the minimal
usage of it. The visit to the Rumah Charis was a successful one because when we
distribute the food to the children and the staff there, you can see the joy in their face.
The children are friendly and playful that brings the childhood experience we had
once. It’s an experience that everyone in our group would like to experience again for
the future.
Distributing food and gift such as story books.

Reflections And The Community:
When we first started, we were not very sure of what we were going to expect
throughout the assignment. Our first task was to hunt for resources and sponsors for
our project. We soon realised the task was not as straight forward as stated in the
brief. Through communicating with other people, most we have never met before, we
learned to put ourselves out in the community and be part of it. Being rejected many
times along the way, we were gutted at times, but we kept on trying and eventually we
managed to secure the resources we needed. Looking back, that thought us to be
courageous, and not to be afraid of what other people may think of you. We believed
in what we were trying to strive to the very end because life isn’t as easy as one could
imagine. Being out in the public and engaging with other people and exchanging
views with each other made us feel that we are part of a larger system, a larger
interdependence than what we were used to as in school or at home. Throughout the
project, we are lucky an association had noticed our efforts and even supported our
project for example the Food Aid Association. In that sense, we were doing
something that mattered to a bigger community, and knowing that we established
something that could be experienced by people other than ourselves was a very
touching moment. At the same time, the experience was humbling in a way because
as we counted our efforts, we realised how much more other people and groups in the
community had put in and sacrificed on a more regular basis like the Rumah Charis
who provides shelter to old folks and children. We are glad to have this kind of
assignment as it enhance us with a lot of perspective view towards society and are
glad that some association like Food Aid Association and Rumah Charis existed for
the people who are less fortunate. This project not only teach us how to design but
using the concept of 3R – reduce, reuse and recycle really teach us how to cope with
the environment issues that our society is facing. As a group, we feel that we have laid
one step forward in reducing and later eradicating these problems and hopefully for
the future generation would do the same. There a quote saying “At the end of life we
will not be judged by how many diplomas we have received, how much money we
have made, how many great things we have done. We will be judged by ‘I was hungry
and you gave me to eat, I was naked and you clothed me, I was homeless and you
took me in.’ Hungry not only for bread — but hungry for love. Naked not only for

clothing — but naked for human dignity and respect. Homeless not only for want of a
room of bricks — but homeless because of rejection.” ~ Mother Teresa
