INTRODUCTIONIt can be described as change or alteration in physical,
chemical, and biological characteristics of air (atmosphere), water (hydrosphere), and land (lithosphere) that is harmful to human beings and other forms of life.
In India, strict enforcement of environmental laws is lacking.A wide spectrum of culturally very different rituals and mode
of festival celebrations are witnessed in India. However, with festivals come environmental disasters. During
festival season, air and water pollution increases manifold. We have so many festivals and their increasing
commercialization (a growing economy is turning every celebration into a grand occasion to splurge) has led to depletion or pollution of natural resources. In this scenario we should all be aware of what such large-scale unbridled celebrations are doing to our environment.
Air Pollution through Firecrackers
Crackers create noise pollution Children employed in firecracker industry
High Energy Consumption. The use of toxic chemical colors.
The use of wood for burning.
ENVIROMENTAL IMPACTS
The wasteful use of water during Festivals
Use of large music instruments.
Increased level of Sulphur Nitrate, Magnesium, Nitrogen Dioxide which are injurious to our respiratory passages.
Increasing level of heavy metals like lead, cadmium and chrome
Excessive Consumerism
Due to the non-biodegradable materials used for making idols
Contamination Of Water bodies due to dumping of idols in sea water.
Besides polluting the water, they reach humans via the food chain when humans consume the fish and other sea food
APPROXIMATELY 4,000 ADDITIONAL METRIC TONES OF GARBAGE ARE RELEASED IN DELHI ALONE, AND TWICE THE AMOUNT IN MUMBAI.
NEARLY 10,000 PEOPLE GET INJURED BY THE CRACKERS EVERY YEAR.
ASTHMA PATIENTS GET AFFECTED
Use of natural clay idolsLighting lamps the green way.
"Say 'No' to Fire crackers and 'Yes' to life!“
Light Diyas instead of electrical light.
Usage of eco-friendly colors.
Celebrating bonfire in unity.
PRECAUTIONARY METHODS
People should avoid bursting crackers in the building compounds, narrow lanes and congested areas.
Crackers producing noise should not be burst between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.
Crackers which bear the Supreme Court instructions and noise pollution levels alone should be purchased
Enforcing certain regulations during festivities
Waste management, waste segregation and control have to be initiated at all levels
If idols have to be immersed make sure they are made of unbaked mud or clay
Do not buy idols painted with chemical colours or those having non-biodegradable material (thermocol, plastic, etc) as decorations.
Idols can be coloured using natural colours
Fireworks and colours must be bought from registered sources who sell non-toxic products.
The government, NGOs, and the education system along with public awareness campaigns have to contribute towards tackling this fast spreading problem.
CONCLUSIONWe should contribute equally towards society for controlling pollution.
Lets make festivals more joyful & meaningful in eco-friendly manner.
Simple measures can be taken to ensure that Indian festivals become environment and human friendly.
But society at large must also share this burden of keeping the environment clean and healthy.
The Government has the responsibility to implement strict regulation of environmental standards during festivities.
Now, you decide how
are you going
to celebrate
FESTIVALS..
