Integrated Drought Management Programme in Central and Eastern Europe
IDMP CEE Final Workshop; 21-22 April, 2015, Bucharest, RomaniaApril 20152 www.gwpcee.org
Drought has more or less impact on forests in Bulgaria, Slovenia, Lithuania and Ukraine(pilot area) in current climate, 2050 and 2070.
The adaptation measures have to start now to mitigate the negative effect. Thesemeasures depend on climate zone, relief and local existing practice. Different forestconditions of these 4 GWP CEE countries determine the specific list of drought adaptationmeasures which can be used by other countries with similar climate.
Forest demonstration project could be part of IWRM with the positive effect on waterquantity and quality in forest watersheds in the period of droughts.
For the implementation of such projects are necessary not only good foresters and GIS specialists, but also specialists on meteorology, hydrology, biology, ecology, water resources etc.

Hazards to forests: large-scale disturbances, related to repeating droughts
Forest fires
Pests and diseases
Invasive alien species
IDMP CEE Final Workshop; 21-22 April, 2015, Bucharest, RomaniaApril 20154 www.gwpcee.org
Risk assesment of sensitive forest habitat types to large-scale disturbances, related to repeating droughts;
Selection of SMART* forest drought stress indexes – combining climate, vegetation and soil
Mapping of forest drought – combining remote sensing with terrestrial measurements;
Economic valuation of large-scale disturbances in forests, related to repeating droughts
*Specific – target a specific area for improvement; Measurable – quantify or at least suggest an indicator of progress; Assignable –specify who will do it; Realistic – state what results can realistically be achieved, given available resources; Time-related – specify when the result(s) can be achieved.

Development of Drought Management plan for forests:
Best practice guidelies and apropriate forest management measures
Selection of appropriate tree and shrub species for forestation;
Monitoring the impact of logging residues to forest site conditions and forests biodiversity;
Preserving the forest fund at water basin level;
Increasing rotating ages to increase water protection role in water basins;
Restoration of wetlands by promoting native tree and shrub species and supporting their natural regeneration.
