How Fast Does
Knotweed Grow?
In 2010 BBC News reported that Japanese Knotweed was costing taxpayers about £150 million per year. These estimates have rocketed recently as the weed appears in landscaping developments, water lines and housing foundations.
Japanese Knotweed has become a big problem for homeowners resulting in mortgage reconsiderations and property problems.
How Japanese
Knotweed GrowsThere are two most
recognisable ways to
eradicate Japanese
Knotweed. The first is to apply a
glyphosate-based weed killer,
the second to dig the roots out
and dispose of the waste.
However, once the knotweed
has been dug up it must legally
be disposed of at licensed
landfills.
How Japanese
Knotweed GrowsThe BBC revealed in that the
government was
experimenting with a plant-
eating predator in 2010, an
insect that is a natural predator
for knotweed.
The weed expands rapidly due
to the aggressive reproductive
nature of the stems. This makes
destroying Japanese
Knotweed an ongoing process
that can take 3-4 treatments a
year.
How Japanese
Knotweed Grows
Science has shown that in
Japan the knotweed is
controlled by its natural
predators. However, in the UK
this fact is not true.
The plant can grow up to 1
metre in three weeks. The
flowering part of the plant
grows rapidly, as do the roots
that spread quick and deeply.
Knotweed Myths
Knotweed is incredibly
aggressive but there are some
myths surrounding the plant.
For example, it is untrue that
Japanese Knotweed can burst
foundations or cause breaks in
the water pipes. In reality, the
Japanese Knotweed simply
grows through any existing
cracks or openings.
Once the roots expand in these
cracks, the cement can crack
causing serious damage.
Knotweed Myths
The cost of eradication has
been estimated at £1.56 billion
by the DEFRA.
In addition to growing at
impressive speeds, Japanese
Knotweed can overcome any
vegetation in its path,
effectively destroying your
garden.
