Every year, the Kentucky Derby, a 1.25-mile thoroughbred horse race, takes place in
Louisville, Kentucky.
The Kentucky Derby is known as “The Greatest Two Minutes in Sports”.
The Derby is also known as “The Run for the
Roses” because of the lush blanket of 554 red roses awarded to the
race winner each year.
The Kentucky Derby is the first in a series of coveted Triple Crown races, which also include the
Preakness and Belmont Stakes.
No Derby has ever been postponed because of rain or bad weather. The race is held on the first Saturday in May – this year on May 3, 2014.
