Dear UW-Stevens Point Alumni,
Discover a destination blanketed in lush, unspoiled wilderness, where breathtaking, icy blue glaciers plunge into the sea, incredible wildlife abounds, and majestic mountains rise above dense, virgin forests—this is Alaska. Depart from Seattle and sail the Outside Passage to Sitka, an astoundingly picturesque city known for its many historic attractions. Take in the spectacular sight of Hubbard Glacier, the longest tidewater glacier in Alaska, followed by a visit to Haines, boasting glorious vistas of Portage Cove and the majestic Coast Range, and near the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve. Next is Alaska’s cosmopolitan capital, Juneau, where an exhilarating blend of nature and modern culture await, then on to Icy Strait Point, a seaport nestled in the lush, seemingly endless northern forest. Continue to Wrangell, a quaint timber and fishing community, and one of Alaska’s oldest towns. Cruise the scenic Inside Passage en route to Victoria, Canada’s former British colony, famed for its charming houses, lovely gardens and colonial heritage, before concluding your journey in Vancouver.
A voyage aboard Oceania Cruises Regatta is like no other, a unique experience that combines elegance with exceptional intimacy, where a crew of 400 caters to only 684 passengers. Whether dining on gourmet cuisine considered the finest at sea, absorbing an interesting guest lecture, listening to a classical string quartet, or relaxing in your spacious, well-appointed stateroom or suite, the inviting Regatta is a rewarding and relaxing retreat at sea.
For those sailing with young travelers, Oceania Cruises is offering the Alaska Explorer Youth Program, an exciting opportunity for children ages 5 to 12 to explore the wonders of Alaska and the Pacific Northwest Coast. Designed to create meaningful, enriching experiences, the program is led by skilled and enthusiastic youth counselors and includes games, activities and Alaska-inspired special events.
With such an outstanding ship and popular itinerary, this cruise will fill up quickly. Space is limited, so you are encouraged to sign up now for your preferred stateroom or suite. Also, the incredible offers of 2-for-1 cruise fares with free airfare and $1,500 savings per stateroom are only available until November 14, 2013. Don’t miss the opportunity to take in Alaska’s rugged natural beauty while traveling with fellow alumni on this remarkable adventure.
Best wishes from your Alumni Association!
Sincerely,
Laura Gehrman Rottier, ’02 Director of Alumni Affairs

CRUISE ITINERARYJUL 31: SEATTLE, WASHINGTONDepart 5PMEmbark on your luxury cruise aboard Regatta in Seattle, Washington’s exciting waterfront city and home of the famed Space Needle.
AUG 01: CRUISING THE OUTSIDE PASSAGECruise the Outside Passage through the open blue waters of the Pacific Ocean.
AUG 02: SITKA, ALASKA Arrive 2PM–Depart 9PMHistorically significant and vibrantly multicultural, Sitka is not only the storyteller of some of the state’s most compelling history, but breathtakingly beautiful as well. First called Shee Atika by the Tlingit Indians, and then New Archangel by the Russians who ousted them, this city claims itself the cultural center of southeast Alaska. Its fascinating museums house some of the state’s oldest native culture collections, while the Sitka National Historical Park boasts totem-lined forest trails and authentic artisan exhibits.
AUG 03: CRUISING HUBBARD GLACIERA journey to Alaska would not be complete without viewing the majestic Hubbard Glacier. As Alaska’s longest tidewater glacier, its unrivaled proportions stretch over six miles creating dramatic vistas of sparkling blue ice. As the towering glacier moves and calves, crashing chunks of ice fall into the bay creating a sound called ‘white thunder’ by the Tlingit people.
AUG 04: HAINES, ALASKAArrive 9AM–Depart 8PM Situated along the pristine shores of the Lynn Canal, America’s longest and deepest fjord, is Haines, a quaint town cradled by dramatic, snow-capped mountains and a sea of lush, breathtaking wilderness—providing a natural haven for brown bears, moose and bald eagles. This scenic Alaskan town is dotted with totem poles and boasts fascinating Tlingit Indian relics in the popular Sheldon Museum. The nearby Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve, located along the Chilkat River, beckons visitors with picturesque scenery and outstanding bird watching opportunities.
AUG 05: JUNEAU, ALASKA Arrive 7AM–Depart 6PMFounded in 1880 when Joe Juneau and Richard Harris struck gold, the thriving town of Juneau offers an eclectic mix of people and pastimes. This is the capital of Alaska, but politics is only a small part of the experience here. The downtown’s charming shops offer traditional Alaskan goods and Native American totems and art, while spectacular mountain scenery stuns from every angle. The famous Mendenhall Glacier is just outside town, and even a casual observer is likely to spot bald eagles, humpback whales and perhaps even a black bear.
AUG 06: ICY STRAIT POINT (HOONAH), ALASKA Arrive 7AM–Depart 4PMWilderness and tribal traditions intertwine in Icy Strait Point. Its notable cannery dates back to 1930, offering a glimpse into Alaska’s more recent history, while bears, eagles and humpback whales make up a population that outnumbers everyone. Just over a mile away, is culturally-rich Hoonah, a Tlingit fishing village for hundreds of years and home to the largest Native settlement in Alaska.
AUG 07: WRANGELL, ALASKA Arrive 8AM–Depart 4PMSituated near the mouth of the Stikine River, this small and friendly city still honors its dramatic past. Once a Tlingit Indian stronghold, then a Russian settlement, later a British trading post, and ultimately purchased by the U.S., Wrangell commemorates the changes it has endured. Its museum offers insight into the three gold rushes that transformed the area and a glimpse of its native past can be found at a traditional Tlingit tribal house.
AUG 08: CRUISING THE INSIDE PASSAGECruise the Inside Passage along Canada’s scenic west coast into Alaska’s more sheltered Inside Passage, a stunning waterway dotted with countless islands and edged by pristine forests and mountains.
AUG 09: VICTORIA, B.C., CANADA Arrive 9AM–Depart 5PMRich with British heritage and overflowing with cosmopolitan charm, Victoria is a town where High Tea and world-class flower gardens are part of everyday life. Here in western Canada’s oldest city, Victorian and Edwardian-era mansions stand near elegant shops offering the latest in European fashion. Many viewpoints, including Dallas Road, offer breathtaking views of the waterfront, perfect for drinking in the surreal beauty of the surrounding mountains and ocean.
AUG 10: VANCOUVER, B.C., CANADADisembark and bid farewell to Regatta.
