As we head into Convocation and our Annual Meeting, the BU Foundation has had a busy and very productive year. Our Fundraising and Stewardship sub-committees are well under way and looking ahead to recruiting more members from across Canada.
The Standing Ovation Campaign for the School of Music has now raised over $704,000 and continues to grow. Thank you to all alumni, donors and our corporate/individual friends who have supported us to date on this important initiative. Our Annual Fund Campaign was also very successful, with an increase in average gift size and a total of $52,000 raised... a true testament to the value that our BU alumni place on supporting the highest quality education.
Early this spring, we had the opportunity to dedicate a new lounge space on campus with the unveiling of the Lewis D. Whitehead Atrium. This beautiful space is adjacent to the CGA Conference Centre on the second floor of Clark Hall and features a couch, chairs and tables that were generously
donated by Ashley Furniture Homestore, arches designed by Dr. Lou Visentin and a variety of plants that were contributed by the BU Beautification Committee.
Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Dr. Lou Visentin for his strong commitment to the Foundation over the years and his ongoing support of our fundraising initiatives. It has been a pleasure working with Dr. Visentin on Foundation endeavours. On behalf of the Foundation, I wish Dr. Visentin and
his wife, Mary, all the best as he completes his term as President and Vice-Chancellor at Brandon University. Sincerely,
Dr. Jeff BalesPresident, Brandon University Foundation
Greetings from the President of Brandon University Foundation
To all of the donors who have contributed to the various BU campaigns over the last nine years, I send you my very best wishes as I take my leave from this great University. If all things fall in place, I’ll have been here while we raised upwards of $40 million. Notwithstanding dollar amounts, the alumni and public have been very generous in their support of the University.
For me, meeting all of you during one campaign or another was a pleasure. I came here to serve, and I will continue to do that in the future. It will just be directed towards my family, grandchildren and the other things that I love.
In short, I love the University, and it was an honour to be here and serve as the seventh President and Vice-Chancellor of the University. It is the Jewel of the Midwest.
Ciao, and go Bobcats!
Dr. Louis P. VisentinPresident and Vice-Chancellor

I was very pleased to join our distinguished and internationally renowned faculty last summer as Dean of the School of Music and Chair of this important Campaign. As we celebrate more than 100 years of music excellence in training and performance at BU, the Standing Ovation Campaign continues to raise funds to help ensure that our School of Music remains to be one of Canada’s most illustrious music schools.
We have had many supporters who together have enabled us to raise more than $704,000. By taking an active role as an investor in the future of our students, they have helped to ensure and enhance the legacy of excellence and personalized attention that has long been the defining hallmark of Brandon University School of Music.
Thanks to these donors, many enhancements have been made to our School of Music. We have increased funding for outreach and teaching support, we have acquired much-needed musical instruments to replace those that were purchased more than 30
years ago and we have numerous new scholarships and bursaries to help our students offset the costs of their education. Funds raised through the Lorne Watson Recital Hall Seat Sale have enabled us to establish an endowment that will provide for the most pressing needs of the School of Music in perpetuity, and we have increased library acquisitions in Jazz Studies.
I extend my heartfelt thanks to all who have contributed to the Standing Ovation Campaign for the role they have
played in ensuring that the School of Music continues to flourish in its next 100 years and beyond.
Sincerely,
Dr. Michael KimDean, School of MusicChair, Standing Ovation Campaign
Greetings from the Campaign Chair
Donors recognized for their significant supportWhile benefactors make their pledges for support out of a sense of loyalty and commitment to the University rather than for any recognition they might receive, we have a unique opportunity within the Standing Ovation Campaign to name rooms within the School of Music for our major donors, and we are pleased to honour them in this way.
Ray (’51) and Barb Bailey, long-time friends of Brandon College/University recently set up the Barbara Bailey Scholarship in Voice. Their $10,000 contribution, matched with an equal amount from the Manitoba Scholarship and Bursary Initiative, will generate an annual award of approximately $1,000 for voice majors based on financial need and academic merit. A small practice room will be named for them in recognition of their generosity.
Undesignated gifts enable us to use funding where we need it the most. Alumnus D’Arcy Barker (’91) recently pledged an undesignated gift of $15,000 to the Campaign. We are pleased to name a large practice studio in recognition of D’Arcy’s generous gift.
These contributions to the Campaign will now become a permanent part of the School of Music’s rich legacy.

Lorne Watson Recital Hall Seat SaleBrandon University staff, faculty and alumni, businesses and even Lorne Watson himself have supported the Standing Ovation Campaign by “purchasing” a seat in the Lorne Watson Recital Hall. To date, more than half of all the seats have been sold, raising $112,000 for an endowment to support the greatest needs of the School of Music in perpetuity. When donors contribute $1,000 (payable in installments) to this fundraising endeavor, we will provide a nameplate on one of the seats in the Lorne Watson Recital Hall in recognition of their support, or in honour of a loved one.
Connor, Clark & Lunn Financial Group establishes $60k bursary The amount of financial aid available to Brandon University School of Music students received a major boost this year when Connor, Clark & Lunn Financial Group established a $60,000 endowment to create the Connor, Clark & Lunn Financial Group Bursary in Music. Their gift of $30,000, matched by the Manitoba Scholarship and Bursary Initiative will generate approximately $3,000 per year, and will be awarded annually to students enrolled in the School of Music who demonstrate financial need. The bursary will cover approximately 75% of an average full-time student’s tuition – a significant amount of financial aid for BU students.
“We have had a long association with Brandon University and are very pleased to be able to create a legacy that will make a difference in the lives of needy students for many years to come,” says Mr. Phil Cotterill, Head of the Client Solutions Team with Connor, Clark & Lunn Financial Group.
“We are extremely grateful to the Connor, Clark and Lunn Financial Group for their generosity to the School of Music,” says Dean of Music Dr. Michael Kim. “Their gift will provide a significant and lasting legacy that will benefit generations of School of Music students and their families for many years to come.”
In recognition of their support, Brandon University will name the Piano Teaching Studio currently occupied by renowned pianist Alexander Tselyakov the Connor, Clark & Lunn Financial Group Piano Teaching Studio.

Brandon University has announced plans for a new $15 million Healthy Living Centre. The Centre, which will be located at Louise Avenue and 20th Street, will incorporate the University’s existing 30,000 square-foot facility, which will undergo extensive renovation and add new construction that will expand eastward on Louise Avenue to increase the building’s overall size to approximately 70,000 square feet.
The new Brandon University Healthy Living Centre will be of great benefit to Brandon University’s students, staff and programs: Bobcat sports teams will have a national class gymnasium in which to play home games and welcome visiting teams. New classrooms will provide expanded learning space for BU Physical Education courses and BU recreational programs while Mini University will have access to more space and more floor time and therefore the ability to expand programming. In addition, the campus will benefit from the addition of 150 new parking spaces.
The Brandon University Healthy Living Centre will not, however, be limited to Brandon University students, faculty and staff. Local high school teams will be welcome, through arrangement with BU Athletics, to use the facility for hosting games and tournaments. Westman citizens will be welcome to
obtain memberships for use of the indoor walking track, weight training equipment and cardio fitness facility as part of the Great West Life Fitness Room. The enhanced sports medicine centre, courtesy of a generous donation from the late Dr. James S. Brown, will provide care and treatment to people in the Westman community who require it.
A number of corporate supporters such as Manitoba Blue Cross have already acknowledged the benefits of this facility to Brandon and Westman. “When Brandon University approached us with the opportunity to partner in the development of their new Healthy Living Centre, it was a perfect fit with the Manitoba Blue Cross philosophy of promoting wellness throughout our Province. We congratulate Brandon University as they begin this new venture and continue leading positive lifestyle changes in our community,” says Andrew W. R. Yorke, President & CEO of Manitoba Blue Cross.

Brandon University has benefited greatly from the foresight of generous friends and alumni. Their planned contributions have helped BU maintain the high standards that have truly made the campus something special. These legacy gifts have become an increasingly popular method of giving. In addition to attractive tax incentives, many individuals want to leave their own legacy for which they will be remembered. There are many methods of legacy gifts including bequests, gifts of securities, life insurance, charitable gift annuities, charitable remainder trusts, and charitable residual trusts.
Legacy Giving at Brandon University
Brandon University received its largest gift ever in 2008 in a $4.5 million bequest from alumnus Joseph Robertson, B.A. ’39. This generous contribution was made in memory of his sister, Kathleen Robertson Weisbrod and his brother, Arthur Robertson, who were also both
graduates of Brandon College. Mr. Robertson had demonstrated his great generosity to BU many times over. In December 2007 he contributed $500,000 to BU’s Healthy Living Centre and Mr. Robertson also made regular donations to the Annual Fund, of which he said “I get much joy from giving a gift to BU each year.”
Joseph Robertson was born in Neepawa, Manitoba and moved with his parents to Brandon at a young age. He graduated from Brandon College (now Brandon University) with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1939. This laid the foundation for his graduate degree, which he received from the University of Toronto in 1941.
After receiving his Master’s Degree, Mr. Robertson joined Domtar Pulp and Paper Limited in Cornwall, ON as a research chemist. He continued to move up through the ranks until he was named Executive Vice-President and Executive Director, Domtar, Incorporated in 1979.
“This is an extremely significant donation for Brandon University,” says Dr. Louis Visentin, BU President and Vice-Chancellor. “It will certainly assist us in making huge strides in the development of our Healthy Living Centre as well as improve many other areas of the University.”

Legacy Giving at Brandon UniversityTommy & Beryl McLeod – A Lasting LegacyThanks to the generosity and pre-planning of one of Brandon College’s most illustrious graduates, Brandon University is the recipient of a generous bequest that has provided substantial scholarship funding for students through the Tommy and Beryl McLeod Scholarship Fund, as well as funding for the renovation and creation of the Tommy McLeod Curve Gallery and the Brandon College Alcove in the John E. Robbins Library.
After receiving his B.A. from Brandon College in 1940, and his Master of Arts degree from Indiana University in 1941, Dr. McLeod returned to Brandon College to teach economics and sociology. He held a Ph.D. in Government and Economics from Harvard and was employed in a number of influential positions in Universities, provincial and federal governments, and various Commissions of Inquiry. He was a recipient of the Vanier Medal and was appointed in 2003 as a member of the Order of Canada. In 1987, he received an Honorary Degree from Brandon University.
Dr. Thomas and Mrs. Beryl McLeod (Associate ’44) never forgot their ties to Brandon College/University and together they made many contributions that have made a substantial impact on the Brandon University Campus. It is Mrs. McLeod’s hope that this generous bequest from her late husband will help aspiring students to realize their dreams, while also leaving a lasting legacy for “Tommy” as he is fondly remembered.
In October 2008 The McLeod Curve Gallery and The Brandon College Alcove in the John E. Robbins Library were officially dedicated in appreciation of Tommy and Beryl McLeod’s many contributions to Brandon University.
The A. E. McKenzie Legacy SocietyThe A.E. McKenzie Legacy Society is named in honour of Albert Edward McKenzie, the first person to designate a legacy gift to Brandon University. Given at the height of the Depression in the 1930’s, the gift saved the University from certain closure.
The Legacy Society recognizes the leadership of farsighted individuals who have/will use a planned gift to create their legacy. Unfortunately, many legacy gift donors go unrecognized during their lifetime because the University is unaware of their generosity. Recognition is our way of extending sincere appreciation to those who have committed to a legacy gift. When requested, anonymity is kept in strictest confidence.

The Brandon University Foundation Presidents’ Circle brings together our most dedicated supporters who believe in the importance of fostering the future of Brandon University, our students and faculty. Donors of $1,000 or more within one year are recognized as Presidents’ Circle level donors and these contributors provide a solid foundation for the future of Brandon University. In appreciation of their valued support, Presidents’ Circle members are invited to participate in exclusive events that feature exciting campus accomplishments and activities.
This past December, Presidents’ Circle members enjoyed a complimentary performance and reception at the School of Music entitled “J.S. Bach for the Holidays”. The concert of Bach concerti for two, three, and four pianos featured members of Professor Alexander Tselyakov’s piano ensemble class with
the School of Music Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Professor James W. Mendenhall. Guests were particularly amazed by the combination of Professor Tselyakov, Dr. Michael Kim, his wife Kyung Kim, and student Michelle Price, who performed “Fugue in G Minor ‘The Great’ for four pianos, eight hands”.
The sight of all four baby grand pianos on the Lorne Watson recital hall stage was indeed impressive! The reception afterward featured delicious appetizers catered by Remington’s Seafood and Steakhouse, and guests were able to take home a complimentary bottle of this year’s Presidents’ Circle Reserve wine, courtesy of Ray and Myrna Schween of the Happy Corker. We thank all our members who attended this event for making it so memorable.
For further information or to become a member of the Presidents’ Circle, please contact Cindy Yacyshen in the Department of Institutional Advancement at 204-727-9689 or via e-mail at [email protected].

In October of each year BU alumni are contacted by mail and via telephone by current students and asked to support their Alma Mater. And each year our alumni answer that call. This year was no exception, and, thanks to alumni from across Canada and beyond, the 2008-09 Annual Fund raised more than $52,000. This generous support helps to provide a high
quality education for our students. Funds raised will be designated to each of our five faculties, increasing scholarship and bursary support, providing new library acquisitions, and much more. A portion of these funds has also been designated to the Standing Ovation Campaign for our School of Music, as well as to the Healthy Living Centre.

For over 100 years Brandon University has received an enormous amount of financial and volunteer support from individuals and organizations. The Order of the Sheaf is an honour society that recognizes those whose financial support has helped to ensure the advancement and quality of higher education at Brandon University.
This year we are pleased to report that we have inducted 44 new members into the Order of the Sheaf and that 15 current members advanced to a higher philanthropic level. Donors reach recognition levels based on their total contributions
to Brandon University. Membership in the Order of the Sheaf begins automatically when a donor reaches a cumulative gift level of $1,000 or more. Names listed in italics advanced to a new level of recognition in 2008; those listed in bold indicate that the donor is new to the Order of the Sheaf.
Every effort has been made to ensure that this report is accurate and complete. Please report any errors or omissions to the Department of Institutional Advancement at (204) 727-7374, via email at [email protected], or toll free at 1-877-282-4483.
