RYA DINGHY SHOW 2018 3

SAILING FOR LIFE This year's show celebrates sailing as

a sport for everyone

Welcome to the 67th RYA Dinghy Show, presented by Suzuki in association with Yachts & Yachting and Gill.

From the very first Proctor designs that are still being sailed today, to the development of foiling and adventure cruising, we’re delighted to be presenting this year’s show, which celebrates dinghy sailing as a lifetime sport… and this year’s show certainly has something for everyone. #dinghysailingforlife

You could be just about to take to the water for the first time, an experienced racer, or introducing your family to sailing. All the inspiration and advice you need can be found at this year’s show.

The show this year is being hosted by Stevie Morrison and Saskia Clark. Stevie first came to the show with his dad, where he met well known sailors and members of the marine industry. He says: "I found myself so

excited by all the dierent boats and talk of sailing. I still feel that same buzz when I visit the show as a grown up! One of my favourite aspects is meeting new people of all ages who share my love for the sport, as well as catching up and having a laugh with old friends and colleagues."

"For me, the show is just the best way to start the sailing year," Saskia adds. "We look forward to seeing you at the show!"

presented by Suzuki and thank you for joining us,

we hope you have a great time. The RYA team has

been working extremely hard to bring a whole

4 RYA DINGHY SHOW 2018

Whether you’re aged eight or 80, the

best thing about dinghy sailing is that

there’s always something new to learn,

experience or discover.

Racing, cruising, foiling or family

sailing - the RYA Dinghy Show has it all!

With two new stages, a brand new

line-up of speakers, plus activities to

inspire all ages, there will be plenty for

you at this year’s show.

WHAT’S ON?

Adventure cruisingFor most of us the thought of living on

board a dinghy for three days, braving 25kt

winds and 15ft swell would be unthinkable!

Not so for record-breaking cruising sailors,

Phil Slade (Royal Navy) and Mark

Belamarich MBE. If you have a taste for

adventure, catch them on the Suzuki Main

Stage to hear all about their epic oshore

voyage, sailing their Bosun an incredible

distance of 309.25 nautical miles from

Plymouth to Portsmouth via France. Find

out more on page 16 and see the intrepid

duo at 11:15 (Saturday and Sunday).

Get the knowledgeVisit the Knowledge Zone for interactive coaching and demonstrations from the experts who can help you improve your sailing, whatever your sailing experience.

Paralympic Gold medallist Helena Lucas (11:00 Saturday and Sunday) gives her expertise for getting the perfect start, and Steve Cockerill returns to share his top tips on steering to trim (14:00 both days). Get race fit with the British Sailing Team’s Alex Hopson (12:00 both days), and discover which hiking techniques work best and also how to avoid injury with RYA Coaching Development Manager, Dave Mellor (16:00 both days).

Brand new stagesWomen’s sailing is thriving and for the first time this year we have the Women’s Sailing Hub. This new addition will showcase inspirational female sailors, and Q&A sessions.

Also new for 2018 is a showcase of class associations being staged in the Great Hall.

Find out everything you need to know about your favourite class, including 2018 events and how to get involved.

A LIFE

AND LOVE OF SAILING

How a lifelong passion has shaped life for Ian Walker, the RYA’s Director of Racing

YY_DG_IAN WALKER_FINAL.indd 8 30/01/2018 14:23

9RYA DINGHY SHOW 2018

Last year Ian Walker returned to dry land after competing in round the world races for eight years to take on the role of RYA's Director of

Racing, taking over from John Derbyshire. Here, Ian tells us how sailing has featured

throughout his life, and how, having sailed through the RYA sailing scheme, is now looking forward to encouraging other young sailors to fulfil their sailing dreams...

Discovering a love of waterI was born in Worcestershire but moved to France as a young child. My parents didn’t sail, but my first memory is renting model boats and sailing them in the fountains in Paris. When we returned to England we lived five minutes from Chipstead Sailing Club in Kent, and I started sailing with my sister. There was no such thing as formal coaching then, you learned by crewing for adults. I remember how it felt winning my first race. I was so proud I took the prize into my primary school for ‘show and tell’.

Teenage obsessionBy the age of 11 I was helming whenever I could, and would sail anything, any time. My

bedroom walls were covered in pictures of boats and I loved buying Yachts & Yachting every fortnight. I competed at my first winter series at Weir Wood Sailing Club and remember crying most weekends because it was bitterly cold; we had no proper sailing kit in those days. It was during one of those weekends that I first saw a 470 flying past, with the spinnaker up and someone on the trapeze. When I was told they were trying for the Olympics, I knew I wanted to do the same. I went on to join Jim Saltonstall’s winter training sessions and competed in the Mirror Worlds in 1987 before moving into the 420 then the 470. At university I sailed the 470 during the holidays and captained the Cambridge University Sailing Team.

Twenties: highs and lowsAt 21, I went full-time sailing and competed at my first 470 Worlds in Australia. There wasn’t any Lottery funding and I was based in the back of my car! I was sailing with Gareth Edwards and we finished fifth at the 1992 Barcelona Olympic trials.

After missing out on the Olympics I sailed International 14s for a year. I then got a call from John Merricks, one of my rivals for the

Barcelona trials, asking if I wanted to crew for him in the 470. From the outset it just worked with us. The next year we were ISAF World Champions and in 1995 we won the Olympic trials. When we stood on the podium being presented with our silver medals at Atlanta 1996 it was the realisation of my dream; I was an Olympic medallist.

When John tragically died in a car crash in 1997, I was lost for a while. I did a bit of 49er sailing and, with the arrival of Lottery funding, as a medallist the RYA helped me with some funding. It was another tragedy, the loss of Glyn Charles in the 1998 Sydney-Hobart Race, which led to my partnership with Mark Covell and ultimately our silver medal winning Sydney 2000 Star campaign.

Thirties: going pro and fatherhoodAfter Atlanta I’d had my first taste of professional sailing, competing in the Admiral’s Cup. When Peter Harrison asked me to skipper a British America’s Cup entry the Olympics were put to one side. This was really my first full-time occupation. I’d always enjoyed the business side of

Part of my lifeEvery stage of my sailing life has been about being part of a team. I like building teams and getting the best out of people, which helps in my role as RYA Director of Racing.

This will be a considerable change for me having spent more than 25 years racing boats. Sailing has a lot to oer people and I’m looking forward to working with clubs, classes and volunteers to make it as accessible as possible.

Come along to Ian's talk on the Suzuki Main

Stage at 13:45 (Saturday and Sunday).

campaigning, now I could use those skills raising money, writing contracts, and skippering the boat. During the same period our two daughters arrived.

After the America’s Cup, I had the opportunity to coach Sarah Ayton and her crew, Sarah Webb and Pippa Wilson for the Athens Olympics; the team winning Yngling gold gave me a dierent sense of satisfaction. But it was a one-o.

When I was appointed skipper of Green Dragon for the 2008-09 Volvo Ocean Race it would dominate the next eight years of my life!

Forties: a decade of two halvesFor the first Volvo Ocean Race our daughters were young enough for the family to travel around quite a bit. But by my last race in 2014-15, school meant the family came to just a handful of stopovers. Consequently, I wasn’t around much when the girls were discovering sailing. Their passion came from taking part in junior fortnights at Itchenor Sailing Club and it was the social, fun side that motivated them. In 2012 I competed in the Mirror Nationals for fun with Zoe. Thankfully we won, 23 years after my last Mirror win!

After fulfilling another dream of winning the Volvo Ocean Race I gave up professional sailing to take on my new role at the RYA. We live near Warsash Sailing Club and I’ve got more hands on, helping with junior training and doing some impromptu coaching. I wanted to be more involved at the weekends. The club is at the heart of the community. I’ve gone back to enjoying the sport for what it is, no strings attached.

I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO WORKING WITH CLUBS AND CLASSES TO MAKE SAILING AS ACCESSIBLE AS POSSIBLE

12 RYA DINGHY SHOW 2018

The Class Association Stage in the Great Hall will see a whole variety of classes taking the spotlight for 15 minutes of fame to share

their activities and events. It will be a great opportunity for visitors to find out more about all kinds of sailing - from junior and family-friendly classes to high octane double-trapeze ski s - and how to get involved in a new class.

Two classes exhibiting at the show will be demonstrating their appeal and inclusivity to all ages and abilities...

Celebrating inclusivity The RS Association will be celebrating its

TOP OF THE CLASSThis year, an exciting new stage at the show will celebrate the diversity of dinghy sailing with a programme dedicated exclusively to class associations

25th anniversary in style in 2018, bringing its vibrant community of racing classes together in one of the biggest-ever dinghy regattas. More than 1,000 boats and 1,800 competitors are expected for the RS Games at Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy in August. The event will combine top class racing with a vibrant social scene across all its classes.

The biggest class in the RS stable is the RS200, which regularly attracts 100 plus entries to its nationals and sees hot shots racing alongside sailors of all ages and abilities. As with all the RS classes, the aim is to be inclusive. RS Association chairman Pete Vincent hopes to get across the

message that this is a great year to try an RS. “We'll be highlighting all the good things that we do - not only in terms of organising fantastic events but also that we're fairly unique in that we have a family of boats and a lot of our events bring dierent RS classes together. The events are good for the host clubs and enable sailors to socialize with their friends in other classes and enjoy the legendary socials.”

A touch of magicAnother class making its racing as accessible and welcoming to as many as possible is the Merlin Rocket Owners Association.

Salcombe Merlin Week 2018 will take

make it fun for all. In addition to the big events, there is also annual class training at Rutland and various traveller circuits. Caroline Croft has become the first lady helm to win the Midlands Circuit, and the class is encouraging youngsters with a repeat nationals oer to sponsor three National School Sailing Association teams with free entry, coaching and loan boats.

"We’re fortunate to have a complete spectrum from club sailing to world class competition at the front of the fleet," says Ian. "And we're extremely conscious of providing good racing and a good experience for everybody. We try to be as welcoming as we possibly can."

place 8-13 July. The event combines one race a day for competitors with plenty of time to enjoy the stunning location and socials. It reached its 120-boat limit within an hour of entries opening and has at least 20 on the waiting list.

So what is it that puts the magic into a Merlin event? Nationals organiser Ian Mackenzie says: "As a class we keep thinking we should be doing more - perhaps that’s the answer!"

The Aspire Merlin Rocket National Championship at Lyme Regis in August is expected to receive up to 80 entries and aims to balance eciently-run racing with time ashore for families and partying to

16 RYA DINGHY SHOW 2018

BOUND FOR ADVENTUREInspired to raise money for charity, two intrepid men sailed into small boat oshore history

What do you do when you break a world record? Break it again of course! But if that involves braving 25 knot

winds and a 15 foot swell, sailing a 14 foot open Bosun dinghy doublehanded, oshore for over300 miles, you would be forgiven for thinking again.

Not if you’re Leading Seaman Phil Slade (Royal Navy) and Mark Belamarich MBE (Ministry of Defence). In June 2016, the pair cruised their way into the Guinness Book of Records for the ‘longest distance sailed in a doublehanded dinghy’ by sailing their Bosun

309.25 nautical miles from Plymouth to Portsmouth - via France! The pair were sailing for the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity and Bowel Cancer UK. Mark and his sister have both had treatment for bowel cancer and lost their father to the illness, while his daughter carries the gene too.

But after their ‘never again’ moment passed, they felt the lure of achieving another adventure. “The first record was far from comfortable,” says Phil. “We sailed into the Channel in a Force 6. We were both seasick, and the waves looked like mountains. Because we felt so rough we only had a

packet of biscuits and half a litre of water each; we didn’t sleep and we still had to sail the boat safely. But I enjoyed it. How many people are sailing small boats oshore? There was a real sense of achievement.”

So, before they knew it, Phil and Mark were planning to sail their Bosun from Plymouth to Faslane, Scotland, a distance of 500 nautical miles, in a fitting swansong to mark the end of its Navy service as an adventure training boat. The Plymouth-Faslane challenge was on.

PreparationsWhile Plymouth-Portsmouth had been a

and replenishment at sea system we had with our support yacht, to our sleep regimes.

“We had all the safety kit you would expect on a yacht in the dinghy with us. We’re both first aiders, Mark’s a sea survival instructor and there was a doctor on board the support yacht too. We would never be more than quarter of a mile from the yacht.”

Abandoned plansTheir first attempt in early May 2016 didn’t quite go according to plan; safety precautions meant they had to abandon their plans. But the pair still had smashed

their own world record, sailing 331.5nm as far as Holyhead. “Before 2016 I’d never done any long distance sailing at all in a dinghy,” Phil reveals. “In addition, although we had not reached Faslane, we had now broken two world records.”

With a three-week weather window identified, the pair set o again, heading west from Plymouth, on 2 May.

However, within 24 hours a combination of wind and swell in the Bristol Channel plus strong winds forecast saw the attempt aborted. But there was still another 18 days to crack it…

Take twoOn 8 May, at 2pm, their boat, Sixteen, slid out of the Royal Navy Joint Services Sailing Centre at Royal Marines Stonehouse, Plymouth in glorious sunshine.

By 5.30pm Phil and Mark were enjoying their first refuelling stop o Looe and by the following morning they were passing Longships Lighthouse, 2km o Land’s End.

That wasn’t before a bit of unscheduled excitement however.

“We capsized!” Phil explains. “Conditions from the Lizard to Land’s End were a bit hairy and we had spent most of the night surfing down waves. The GPS was reading 12kts and we were doing that in the dark.

“But as we were rounding Land’s End at sunrise, everything died o. We had tidal gates to make or we would be pushed back so we flew the spinnaker to get round. Suddenly the wind increased to 10kts, the bow dug in and over we went.

“It was a brilliantly executed recovery though, with a textbook dropping of the kite and I climbed out as Mark got bailing. Everything we lost, the yacht picked up.”

All going wellSleeping and eating was done while the other was on the helm, while dolphins

step into the unknown, Phil and Mark now knew exactly what they were getting in to. In preparation for their first record, they’d put in a lot of night sailing to learn how the boat would handle by feel, and to get a sense of the night time temperature. They also completed their shore-based RYA Coastal Skipper qualification. For their second record attempt, they changed their approach.

“We set our limits a lot lower,” says Phil. “Everything was more restrictive, but for good reason. We were looking at sailing 500 miles in potentially as little as five days so everything had to be right; from the feeding

I WAS IN THIS LITTLE BOAT THINKING, WHAT AM I DOING?

swam alongside, and a land bird even joined them for a quick bimble around the boat in the middle of the Bristol Channel.

Unfortunately, with the wind dying, they struggled to reach tidal gates on time and found themselves on a backwards conveyor belt. It took three days to limp the length of Wales. And then with a fierce storm forecast,

it felt like they were only delaying the inevitable. “You’re listening to your body and it had started to get unsafe,” Phil concedes.

“Our bodies had begun shutting down, with the temperature so cold at night hypothermia was close, our hands had swollen up and become waterlogged. It was clear to everyone we had to abandon.”

On 12 May, just northwest of Holyhead, the attempt was called o.

They did, however, have a brand new world record to be proud of.

Gaining perspectivePhil admits that there was some disappointment immediately after the abandonment; there wasn’t going to be another opportunity to try again in this weather window. But that was soon replaced by satisfaction from rewriting the record books and raising thousands of pounds for their charities.

Phil also hopes that the pair’s approach to safety has helped people be inspired by the magnitude of their record attempts, and appreciate that dinghy cruising oshore is not simply a case of jumping in a GP14 and sailing o to France.

For now, however, Phil’s mind is already wandering to what’s next.

“I don’t think I’m done with oshore dinghy sailing,” he says candidly. “I definitely haven’t been put o… watch this space.”

Don't miss Phil and Mark on the Suzuki Main

Stage at 11:15, on both Saturday and Sunday.

On a roll: the pair were up

against tides and timings

Despite being forced to abandon their challenge, Phil

and Mark are proud of setting a new world record

21RYA DINGHY SHOW 2018

Most dinghy sailors at some point will have sailed a boat either designed or influenced by Ian Proctor. Born in 1918,

the centenary and legacy of this legendary innovator will be celebrated at this year’s show. Not only the king of elite development classes such as the National 12s, 14s and Merlin Rockets – pushing forward their race development – Proctor was also a true believer that boats should be accessible for everyone.

Post war boomWhen the Wayfarer was launched at the London Boat Show in the 1950s people

100 years after his birth, Ian Proctor's dinghy designs are still breathing new life into many classes

queued around the stand wanting to put down a deposit. Roomy enough for a family and an outboard, it could be bought from a builder or as a home-assembly kit and it could be raced too. Later, as Proctor moved to the vanguard of GRP construction, it also became popular with sailing schools. It was the ultimate all-rounder and was among the many designs recognising the importance of family sailing. He also designed day sailers and small cruisers such as the Seagull and Seamew, Prelude and Reedling, which didn't need to be kept on a mooring and could be towed by an average family car.

A particular success was the Topper, designed in the mid-70s, initially a wooden and then a glass fibre boat, before it gained popularity as a polypropylene plastic boat. Its design had evolved from his car-toppable Minisail of the 1960s, which coincided with the launch of the Mini car.

"You’ve got technological and social change hand in hand," says dinghy historian David Henshall. "Car ownership was

taking o and we were moving away from austerity. Proctor was perfectly positioned to produce better boats than had previously been available."

Just as Proctor's passion for new ideas led to the first injection moulded plastic boat in the Topper, his Kestrel, launched in 1956, was the first production glass fibre dinghy.

He was also at the forefront of developing boats and hull shapes with trapezing as an integral part of the design, including the Osprey in 1953, which was designed to be an Olympic class but lost out to the Flying Dutchman. His later Tempest, a two-man keelboat to replace the Star class, was sailed at two Olympics in the 1970s before the Star made a comeback. Of the two designs, David says it was the Tempest along with the Proctor-designed Peregrine which moved the sport on, towards the performance keelboat racing sector.

Mast designAlongside his boat designs, Proctor is also known for his masts. "This was where he was really driving things forward," says David. "The post war explosion in dinghy sailing could not have happened without a plentiful supply of metal masts. A lot of work goes into making a spruce mast: they break easily and need a lot of rigging. A wooden mast has to stand straight because as soon as it starts bending, it’s going to split. A metal mast can bend, and so all of a sudden you

had the option of changing its shape while you were sailing, and your sail shape, to depower or increase power."

Family manProctor had many worldwide patents and awards to his name, including the honour of being named a Royal Designer for Industry. He was also a writer, joint editor of Yachtsman magazine, and a yachting correspondent for the Daily Telegraph, for whom he was sent first class on the Queen Mary to cover the America's Cup at Newport, Rhode Island, a trip which influenced his Minisail scow design.

His son Roger says he had an incredible drive and natural instinct as an innovator. ‘’Throughout his life he was really interested in new ideas, new materials and new techniques for doing things."

Having started o racing and designing for the hottest development classes of the day, as his children grew up, Ian's ideas progressed. Roger explains: "He recognised that there wasn’t a boat for me when I was little, or my teenage brother, so he started thinking about what people might want to sail. It led to a range of boats and within that journey there were lots of experiments."

The family was based in Warsash in Hampshire, where there was a hub of activity just over the water at Hamble River Sailing Club. Roger says his dad had a good sense of humour and was always

supported by his mum Betty, a superb sailor in her own right. "My mother worked with my father and was a director of Ian Proctor Masts – she thought my dad was a hero and dedicated her life to supporting him. He really couldn’t have done it without her. They were an absolute team."

Legacy of innovationProctor remained an active sailor and involved with his classes until his death in 1992, somewhat poignantly, while at the Wayfarer World Championship at Hayling Island, Hampshire.

His legacy lives on through his many designs and innovations, and the Wayfarer is among a number of his classes – along with the Gull, Kestrel, Osprey and Wanderer – which have been updated by Hartley Boats with designer Phil Morrison for new and future generations to sail. As Roger says: "It’s been a real joy to see classes conceived by my father being given an extra lease of life."

David sums up: "Ian Proctor was a consummate dinghy sailor as a helm and as a crew, he was an inventor, a prolific designer and a thinker. It’s an incredible record of foresight and innovation."

David Henshall's talk about Ian Proctor takes

place on the Suzuki Main Stage at 12:45

(Saturday and Sunday). An exhibition on his life

and designs will be in the West Corridor. Look

In 2013 Seascape introduced its mid term plan; to build at least one model for each of the CE-categories - A, B C and D. The plan was based on one of the Seascapes core beliefs: to get the best possible sailing

experience, the boat should be as simple, fun, high quality and, amongst all as small as possible. After making a solid base covering C and B categories with 18, 24 and 27, we decided to step into the diverse world of dinghies. The 14 is the fi rst
