What is Food?

Is the substance fulfill our daily requirement of nutrition is known as a food.

All nutrients needed by the body are available to feed.

Nutrition – is the study of food in relation to health of an individual, community or society and the process through which food is used to sustain life and growth.

Nutrients - refers to what is not seen by naked eye, Nutrient Obtained from food.

Why is proper nutrition important?

All living things need food and water to live. All human beings need “good food” to live well. Food = energy (measured in calories)

Carbohydrates - 1 gram = 4 calories Protein - 1 gram = 4 calories Fats - 1 gram = 9 calories

Proper nutrition provides the body with the nutrients necessary to build, maintain, and repair tissues.

Types of Nutrients

Macro-Nutrients – essential for human survival and growth Carbohydrates Proteins Fats Water

Micro-Nutrients – essential for growth and enhance the function and usability of macro-nutrients. Vitamins Minerals

The difference between macro and micro nutrients is the amount your need each day. Macro-nutrients must exceed one gram perday.

Effective Nutritional Plan

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Attempt to eat 4-6 meals per day. Minimum of 8 glasses of water per day. Attempt to consume carbohydrates, proteins, and fats in every

meal. Vegetables are the best source of vitamins and minerals. Read labels and understand serving sizes. Supplements should be used as supplements. Make a lifestyle change – diets often fail.

1. Adequate Nutrition is essential to good health – goods nutrition gives a picture of a person with normal weight , height and body frame for his age.

2. The nutrients in our body are in dynamic equilibrium – they must be in metabolic balance: disturbance of one nutrient will affect the others

3. Dietary intake and nutrients need should be individualized

4. Human Requirements for Nutrients are known for some and have to be determined as yet for others.

5. An Adequate Diet is the foundation of good nutrition and it should consist of a wide variety of food.

6. The physiological functions of food are attributed to the roles of the nutrients.

7. Malnutrition is brought about by a faulty diet and/or by conditioning factors like heredity, infections, ingestion of certain drugs, and parasitism.

8. Nutrition Education, abundant food supply, and use of various resources are to improve nutritional status of a population.

9. The study of nutrition is interrelated with allied arts and sciences food.

10. Nutrition education is a multidisciplinary process and forms a bridge between the educator and the consumer in the transport of nutritional principles and application. There is no single approach is nutrition education and to motivate learning and changes food habits, various techniques of communication have to be employed.
