Seed Testing Procedures

Introduction

The First National seed Laboratory of Timor Leste established in

2003. The National Seed Laboratory is located in MAF compound. The

Laboratory is equipped with most important equipment needed to

conduct seed testing for seed certification.

Routine seed testing such as Seed moisture content, physical seed

purity, and seed germination test can done in the laboratory. Basically

ISTA rules with some modification is implemented by trained seed

analyst to asses seed quality of released variety in Timor Leste.

Certified seed and commercial seed of Maize-Sele, Maize Noi Mutin,

Rice-Nakroma, and peanut-Utamua are the most seeds being tested in

the Laboratory. If there is request, the seed lab also conduct seed testing

of imported seed.

Tetrazolium test, seed dormancy breaking by using KNO3 or heat

can also be conducted in the laboratory.

Additional seed testing by

using Tetra-zolium and/ or

KNO3 method is

performed by seed analyst

if they suspect there is seed

dormancy problem in the

seed lots. As an example, in

2013, twenty-five seed lots

had been evaluated by

using TZ test and 10 lots by

KNO3 test.

Number of un-passed rice

seed lots in 2015 is less

compared to rice seed lots in

2014 and 2013. un-passed

rice seed lot in 2015, 2014

and 2013 is 2 lots, 8 lots and

13 lots respectively.

Number of un-passed peanut

seed lot in 2015 and 2014 is

similar. There is 2 seed lot is

considered un-passed in

those both years.

Official Seed testing has

been done since 2010. From

Number of tested seed lot

increased significantly in

2015. Two hundred and four

of seed lots had been tested

in year 2015.

National seed laboratory is established in 2013 and has played an important role

in seed quality assurance for the released variety in the country by providing

official seed testing of Certified and commercial seed produced in the country
