Why are we talking about
advocacy today?
It’s someone else’s job
It takes too much time
I don’t know how
It’s tacky – people will think I’m trying to get a
bigger paycheck
It’s the same as lobbying and I am not
permitted to do that
Because as a profession, we do not embrace our role as
advocates
All Politics is Local…
Last year state
legislatures around
the country passed
45,564 bills,
compared with 352
passed in Congress
An average of 911 bills
per state …therefore all advocacy is local
Change in the way we think about
libraries
YESNO
The hub of the wheel
is stationary & all
spokes point inward
to it
Glue oozes
everywhere & seeps
into every crack
… but also ABTAL
Always be talking about how libraries support the
community
