ANNUAL REPORT(2013-2014)

Respected members, friends and guests,Greeting from MVA! I feel pleasure to present the Annual Progress Report as well as the financial details of accounts for the year 2013-2014 on behalf of the Organization for your review, consideration, acceptance and guidance. Before I start, I must thank you all to be present here in this great event of MVA’s General Body Meeting. Literacy Programme:

To continue our literacy awareness programme, MVA did a strategic change and support centres like ‘Kishori Vikash Kendra’ for Dalit girls have been converted into “School Chalo Abhiyan” programme as a awareness campaign.

One ‘Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidayalaya (KGBV) is successfully being conducted in Manigachhi block. 100 adolescent Dalit girls over eleven year’s age are getting quality education here. These girls are given opportunities in taking participation in organization’s activities. This increases awareness and education level among the students. Issues of Child right, child education etc. are occasionally discussed in the KGBV for enhancing student’s capacity. Students’ committees like Bal Sansad ,Kishori Sansad , Bal Panchayat etc. are working in the school for emergence of leadership among the students. All KGBV students along with instructors are insured against a disaster in advancing School Safety Programme. ALL INDIA DISASTER MITIGATION INSTITUTE Ahmadabad and United India Insurance Co. Ltd. are giving us support in this regard.

We organized Zudo-Karate training camp for KGBV students. Rinky Kumari succeeded a competition, earned award and visited Malaysia. This Rinky is now playing role model to her colleagues.

MVA provided computer education on ADCA, DCA, BIT, CCA to 25 boys and ninety six girls. This helped several boys and girls getting self employment and earning handsome amount. It must be noted that our area needs several computer operator, as the town is emerging a middle class market in the area after construction of NH-57.

MVA is coordinator of North Bihar CACL (Campaign against Child Labor). MVA organized a meeting of important stakeholders. CSOs of different districts of North Bihar attended the meeting. Local media persons and Dalit leaders also attended the meeting. The meeting was convened for creating awareness on hundred percent literacy and Right to Education Act. MVA expected from the participants to do efforts of giving some time towards the development of the society beginning with motivating BPL families to send their school going aged children into schools. Therefore it organized this meeting.

Consumers Awareness programme:MVA is very much worried with the normal behavior of local businessmen. It gets difficulty in getting proper bill and vouchers while purchasing materials for the organization. It causes difficulty for audit purposes where the organization has to abide by financial rules. MVA personally motivated its dealers to keep proper vouchers and bills and it is getting at least. It helped us but it motivated us to create awareness on consumer protection act in the area. Therefore, MVA organized a meeting of local businessmen and local important persons including media people on the issue. This meeting sensitized participants. Many businessmen promised to give pucca bills.

Women International Day: MVA celebrates Women International Day every year on 8th March. This year the day was celebrated under leadership of Kiran Devi, Vice- President of the

organization through a rally in Manigachhi block. The rally had placards showing slogans on women empowerment and gender equality. The rally was culminated at Khadi Bhawan, Manigachhi where a Kanjar woman presided a meeting of the participating women and took oath for doing peaceful struggle for gender equality.

Health Awareness Programme: - Health Awareness programme was organized in three components as follows:a. Naturopathy Awareness Program: Last year’s effort of creating awareness on naturopathy yielded in some feed backs from participants. This encouraged us to replicate the effort. Therefore, MVA organized a training camp this year too. One hundred and two men and women from six Gram Panchayat attended the meeting and patiently heard Dr. Ushakar’s lecture. Dr. Ushakar showed several exercises that motivated participants to learn much.

b. Normal Health Programme:NRHM is working well in the district but Dalits are not recognizing the importance of the mission. They only know that government is giving some incentive to those women who gave birth in government institutions. In this context, it was felt to link ASHA workers and the community, but before it, it was most necessary to train ASHA volunteers. In this connection, a meeting was organized with ASHA workers. Twelve ASHA workers attended the meeting where they were motivated to understand various aspects of NRHM. ASHA workers were sensitized on community based planning and monitoring (CBPM) system and distribute leadership in community itself for getting maximum benefits of the flagship programme of the government.

c. Promotion of Traditional Health System:Ghoghardiha Prakhand Swarajya Vikas supported this organization for promotion of traditional health system for organizing cycle rally, wall painting, plantation of trees and herbs for medicinal properties and organizing awareness creating meetings. MVA did all the activities very innovatively. It has made plans to develop 300 girl students of KGBV as local health friends to work in the community.

Livelihood :Livelihood programme consists of several activities. Awareness generation on MNREGA was created through Rathyatra. Rathyatras were organized in Manigachhi, Tardih, Alinagar and Ghanshyampur village on different dates. Street lectures were organized on different places on various government

schemes pertaining to livelihood and nutrition. Leaflets were distributy for ready references on government schemes. Goatary Bank was created in Lagma, Phulwaria and Phulban villages for Dalit women. These banks distributed goats to 70 BPL Dalit families, all from Musahar community for support of increased income. Napkin Nirman work was initiated to advance personal health and hygiene of BPL women, but it took shape cottage industry in some nine families who are selling sanitary napkins in their villages and earn a good extra amount. A sensitization meeting was organized for PRI members in Manigachhi block to take schemes on MNRGES. It is ironical that most of the PRI members do not know the schemes in real meaning. They said that they will now make pressure on Rojgar Sewak to take as many schemes as to give maximum employment to their villagers. On another hand, in our area, it is most important to intervene in agriculture, the prime source of livelihood. A meeting was organized with selected farmers, local NGOs and farmers to chalk a action plan for agriculture development activities. MVA hopes some action will be done next year.

Right to Information:Right to information camps were again repeated in villages where these were organized in the previous year. The camps experienced that several youths have filed applications under RTI. But most of them said that PIOs are not normally respecting such applications and only a few of them appealed to Commission. The Commission is also taking much time in giving decisions. The situation is discouraging applicants. MVA is planning to ask support from leading organizations in the regard.

Child Labor Awareness programme :MVA was initiated to work mainly for women empowerment. During implementation of projects, it suddenly found that it is giving focus on children basically from Dalit communities. Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya and other activities are focused on child right. Other activities for sending all children to school in different titles are meant for child rights too. MVA became the North Bihar Coordinator of CACL for such reasons.

Environment Awareness Programme:With support from NEAC, Government of India, MVA accomplished different activities for awareness on better environment.

Women Empowerment:Involvement of women in all MVA activities is a strategy to increase confidence and develop leadership among them. Women are moving towards improved social

economical and political status. Women are organized and raise their voices against any injustice in their society. It is sure that they do not have enough knowledge to understand various tentacles of the machinery of injustices lied in the present socio-economic system. Women organizations in ten villages of seven Gram Panchyat in Manigachhi and Tardih blocks of Darbhanga district have several success stories. To keep the vigour of the organizations live MVA continues its activity for them. One two-day workshop was organized to understand dynamics of domestic violence and on related acts for those women organization leaders

Save the Daughter Campaign: A “Beti Bachao Andolan” moved this organization to join the campaign in context of increasing girl infanticide and honor killing. A meeting was organized on the issue with some community and religious leaders. Women organizations were motivated to discuss the issue in their normal meetings and generate awareness in the community at large. Kishori Vikash Kendra and SHGs were also motivated to do similarly.

Disaster Management program:Madhubani and Darbhanga districts are our major working area. Both districts are disaster prone. Flood is almost a regular feature. Fire, Earthquake, Cloud-burst, Heat-wave, Cold wave etc. are major disasters that cause occasional damages of huge lives and property here in the area. In this context, all efforts are being done for disaster mitigation. Disaster Management and now Disater Risk Reduction are major foal activities of the organization. MVA has created trained human resources for DRR and most importantly on School Safety programme. Several training programmes for community, NGOs, volunteers etc. are regularly being organized. Community based disaster mitigation is being ensured through CMDRR committees at grass root level. All India Disaster Mitigation Institute (AIDMI) is supporting this organization in wide range activities. MVA is a core group member of Inter Agency Group (IAG) in Madhubani district and the district convener in Darbhanga. Sphere-India is giving support in conducting IAG activities in the district.

Capacity Building program: Capacity building activities is a normal activity of the Organization. It extends from the community target group leaders to the top brass of the Organization. Several training programmes were organized by the organization itself while staffs, volunteers and officers of the organization also got trainings from other organizations like IGNOU, AIDMI, NIDM,NDMA, BEP, Cord-Aid, Tdh etc.
