Switzerland’s Wir cooperative bank is a Successful Credit
Clearing Association it is called “the granddaddy of complementary
currencies”. Since its creation in 1934, the co-op has experienced greater-than-average activity and growth in periods of economic downturn, demonstrating that it helps stabilize the Swiss economy.
The WIR bank is a not for profit bank. It serves the interest of the clients, not the bank itself. It is a very stable system, not prone to failure as the current banking system is. It remains fully operational even in times of general economic crisis.
The existence of a bank building and six impressive WIR-owned regional offices, as well as the following comparison of data speak for themselves.
The membership, at first was completely open, but later it was restricted in order to build solidarity among the “entrepreneurial middle-class.”
Although WIR started with only 16 members, it has grown rapidly…

GREECE - Volos
• In Volos – Greece during the crises, the shops were full of products but people didn’t have money so resource exchange was slowed down and growing unemployment followed up and led to poverty
• The money that originally was created to make trade more efficient became part of the problem…no money – no Trade…and the results are great suffering …
• until the local people of Volos invented a local currency named TEM. The results were outstanding:
The community decides the roles and management in a democratic way so people and businesses started using it and accelerated the resource exchange and prosperity in the town of Thousands of people.
