By Ellen Scharaga

The ACS has dedicated more than $4 billion toward cancer research since its inception in 1946. Public donations have contributed largely to these funds. In fact, 19 percent of money raised in 2013 was allocated toward cancer research, while the remainder made a positive impact on patient services.
Donations support employment of more than 60 ACS researchers who carry out cancer prevention studies and advocacy programs.
American Cancer Society ResearchIn addition, the researchers publish widely cited
reports that educate the public about occurrences, early detection, and survival rates. Contributions further help ACS provide grants to investigator-initiated projects, which are conducted through non-profit research institutions and universities nationwide. ACS currently funds the studies of more than 800 researchers that show promise of making major cancer discoveries.
