OBJECTIVES

To organize Limb transplant & Calliper Camps for the physically challenged poor persons. This would improve their quality of life and in some cases, help them to be gainfully employed and earn their livelihood in better way We will work with the Rotary Club of Mirzapur, who has experience in executing novel and innovative Rotary projects over the past three decades. The club has good links with all the clubs in the RI District

3210. Limb transplant/Calliper camps has been successfully organised thrice by the club in 2007-2008, 2009-2010 & 2013-2014. Due to limited resources, these camps were limited to 100 cases in each camp. This project will enable the disabled adults and children who can be rehabilitated with increased quality of life. They will be able to increase their income, capability to look after themselves and their family better. We are planning to execute this project in the following steps:

1. Orientation on Project Objectives to the club members and key stakeholders 1st Month Advertising and screening camps all over the district – 1st month

2. Finalize the participating medical team - 1st Month 3. Camp in 2-3 rd week of December 4. Physiotherapy sessions and rehab training- 1 week 5. Follow up after 1 month and six months

Why Mirzapur City? The Mirzapur city has 1373 on record cases related to physically challenged, but if we consider the whole district, these numbers may rise to approx. 10,000. Out of this we found more than 55% were the cases related to loss of limb (FOOT) due to disease & accident or aftermath of POLIO. The above data is based on records provided by Uttar Pardesh Viklang department for the year 2014-15. These figures may rise to manifold if we add off-record data of physically challenged person. There are many dependents in our society who are living on the expectations of others and are unable to use artificial limb/callipers due to lack of knowledge, resources and to some extent shame to disgrace. Our motto is to convince all to take advantage of this project and consider this as boon to stand equally in the society. This camp will reduce the disability burden of the society by reducing or eliminating the handicap of the selected persons. They can be sent back to society and not only with higher self-esteem, but also with greater earning capacity.

The affected person will be fitted with callipers and artificial limbs. This will eliminate the physical handicap of the affected person. These poor people are sentenced to live with these disabilities and only option left for them being to beg at railway stations and temples. Nut these limbs and calipers will give them more respectful options of earning their livelihood. All the beneficiaries will undergo physiotherapy and rehab training. This project will initiate local participants to contribute and local government resources will also be tapped.

BUDGET

FINANCING

The project is derived from the experience of organising three camps. The success of this camp

and follow up of the beneficiaries, shows a dramatic change in the quality of life. This project

become part of the government initiative for reducing disability, but the program is marred by

inaction and limited scope- of providing disability certificate only.

Children, parents and teachers and local village leaders will be directly involved in the

implementation of the project as it is emerged on their felt needs. This local participation will lead

to many further developments, as they will be motivated to come forward with their support for

such projects in future.
