UN Global Compact Network India jointly with Shikhar organization for Social Development organised the 5th National CSR Summit on Enhancing Opportunities to Change the Destiny of Sport; CSR in Indian Sports: Section 135, Companies Act 2013 on 28th February, 2017 in New Delhi. The 5th Summit was attended by morethan 250 people representing NGOs,Civil Society Organisations, Corporates, SMEs, PSUs, Ministry and Private Institutions.

The 5th Summit in the series discussed on the possibilities of development of the sports in India and the enhancement of the status of Indian sports. Since, CSR has been interpreted as the social change agent by doing projects in Health, Education, Livelihood, Environment, Sanitation and Women Empowerment but not in sports. Now it's a high time to set the role of various stakeholders in promoting sports and its infrastructure.

The event was inaugurated by Dr. A.K. Dubey, IAS, Secretary, Department of Youth Affairs, GOI in presence of Mr. Abdul Kalam, Director, OMDC & Former CMD, Coal India; Dr. Bhaskar Chatterjee, Director IILM & Former DG & CEO, IICA; Dr. Hanif Qurechi, IPS, Commissioner of Police; Mrs. Reva

Nayyar, IAS (Retd.) Chairperson, Bal Sahyog; Hanif Qureshi, IPS, Commissioner of Police- Faridabad and Dr. Uddesh Kohli, Executive Member, Governing Council, GCNI and Secretary General, IFTDO.

Dr.A.K Dubey in his inaugural address stated that the business cannot be conducted if the society is not allowing them to do and the corporate sector is more into funding, so the perception of responsibility is social in nature. The govt works on behalf of society and CSR is not a gesture on part of corporate entities. The corporates are there because the society exist. In terms of sports, when person health is ensured the CSR nurtures within that.

Further, Dr. Bhakar Chatterjee, in his keynote address stated that there is a need to focus on different sectors within CSR and highlighted three important points:

The basics of CSR needs to be understood and it should be rupee measurable in terms of making an impact on society.

CSR needs to be projectised through i) Baseline survey ii) Monitoring Mechanism iii) Evaluation iv) Project approval by the board. In

order to do a CSR it is important for the company to first become successful and then make profits, because CSR cannot be a business opportunity.

Duplication of efforts by Government Govt acts as the important player and there is a need to compliment and supplement the CSR by Govt.

The event had two round of panel discussion focussing on Kindling the passion for Sports at Grass Root Level: Challenges & Issues and Creating Infrastructural Support for Global Competition: Collaborative propositions. UN GCNI presented at the Strategic Partnership Country Consortium (SPCC) Workshop organised by ICCo on 9-10th Feb 2017 in New Delhi. Ms. Tamanna Girdhar from UN GCNI made a brief presentation on how UNGC encourages businesses to adopt sustainable and socially responsible policies, and to report on their implementation. The SPCC is a broad programme on Convening & Convincing India in which there are 4 pathways and pathway 4 i.eMoving Towards Sustainable Private Sector specifically focus on building capacities of the agrofood based micro and small enterprises (MSE). This sector in India do not conform to practices which ensure fair wages for women engaged in the sector and curbs or prevents the exploitation of children as cheap labour, despite the existence of a plethora of rules and regulations which discourages both. Thus, the problematic of Pathway 4 which looks at the issue of fair wage and child labour as negative human rights impact, find a clear resonance in UNGCs human rights and labour principles.

Indeed, experience shows that enterprises can and do infringe human rights where they are not paying sufficient attention to this risk.

In addition, he also talked about Company's annual communication on progress (COP)and COP is a key component of companies' commitment to the UN Global Compact. The UN Global Compact requires participating companies to produce an annual COP that details their work to embed the Ten Principles into their strategies and operations, as well as efforts to support societal priorities.

Anand Kumar Bolimera, Director, Change Alliance presented the way forward to the audience where he mentioned that even though there would be challenges, it is important that communities and citizens equally participate in the implementation of Human Rights. Enterprises can affect the human rights of their employees and contract workers, their customers, workers in their supply chains, communities around their operations and end users of their products or services. They can have an impact directly or indirectly on virtually the entire spectrum of internationally recognized human rights. He shared how UN guiding principles deals with internationally recognized Human Rights.

There are several powerful drivers of non-financial reporting that are pushing companies to act responsibly and report on their actions: Mainstream investors are considering Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) information in their strategies. Non-financial information is informing the decisions of consumers, local communities and civil society organizations that are all expecting greater transparency from business.

Executive Director Message

Dear Colleagues and Friends,

I am pleased to express my sincere gratitude to the President and all the members of the Governing Council for giving me the opportunity to lead UN Global Compact Network India (Secretariat) as Executive Director.

At the UN Global Compact Network India, we are

committed and devoted in mobilizing a global movement of sustainable companies and stakeholders to create ethical and transparent businesses in the world. We believe that businesses everywhere can play a pivotal role in improving the world, by doing business with right bound approach. Our goal is to shift corporate mindset and models everywhere to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.

This year is historic for us, as for the first time UN GCNI hosted Global Conference on Making Global Goals Local Business - India on 26-27th April, 2017 that coincided with annual flagship event 12th National Convention on 28th April, 2017 to collaborate and identify ways to achieve sustainable growth while creating positive impact for the society at large. It gives me an immense pride to state that in the past quarter UN-GCNI has expanded significantly within India and increased its sphere of influence over the last four months. So far, we have associated with 262 members which includes Companies/ NGOs/SMEs and Academic Institutes. There is an increasing surge in critical programmatic interventions, cutting edge research publications and capacity building which have been instrumental in enabling us global and regional recognition. With this I am hopeful of UN-GCNI acquiring greater heights in the years to come.

I wish to record, on behalf of UN-GCNI, my deep gratitude to all the colleagues and members and for their support. I am confident that we can continue to count on your unstinting support in the years ahead and we look forward to continuing to collaborate with business and all relevant stakeholders both public and private to demonstrate the enormous potential of a value driven market approach. My colleagues and I look forward to taking our partnership to new heights in the rich landscape of lifelong learning and intellectual development.
