    Editorial

Happy Republic Day to the readers of Patliavadana from team of Patli Urbanocrats!

Due to few reasons we are unable to produce new editions in front of you, but again we are back with our 4th edition. In between this period we had a talk in between our team and well wishers about the future of this e-magazine cum journal, which result in to the new taste of our Patliavadana on the occasion of this Republic Day. This magazine is an open

magazine, in which we are taking social work as well as science together with other topics, which aim towards getting benefitted from each other as well as can know about work in

other sectors too. Patliavadana is a small effort of ours to give something to this society. As we believe in an ancient saying of India that

    Whole World is Our Family

In these years our Indian government is working on Entrepreneurship whose main motive

is to grow self-employment among our people. Because without the growth of self-employment, per capita income cant be better. It doesnt only give chance to grow but help the economy by providing jobs to other. So, it is the need of time to adopt self-employment

which is also in accordance with Startup India Policy of government. It is clearly visible that many areas are lacking in the field of self-employment while state like Gujarat is creat-ing a new story day by day. They are not only providing the employment to themselves but

they are also providing the employment to other. So it is the requirement of time to learn from it, rather than criticizing which is very common due to political reason. So it is need to come above this politics and do something while holding the hand of each together. On this

Republic Day, nothing will be better than this for our country.

    Thanks!

told stories of Entrepreneurship, Nitin Tailor

    els working in the ecosystem.

    Sabarmati Prerna Yatra

The river Sabarmati has been historically significant to the people of the world's largest democracy viz.

India. Gandhi ji had spent a considerable amount of time (1917-1930) along its banks at Sabarmati Ash-

ram. It was there that he developed the Gandhian concept of the Charkha (a symbol of self-

entrepreneurship), which alone, he believed could help the nation protect its bio-diversity and provide sus-

tenance to the poorest of the poor.

Food Processing: Need of Agriculture Based States - Avinash Kumar

F rom our childhood, we have learnt that India is an agriculture based country. The livelihood of maximum people are based on agriculture being as farmer or as labor in the sector. Despite of huge production of different crops, vegetables and fruits; the farmers income is getting re-duced. Even the growing price of seeds, fertilizers also play an important role in this. The farmers of the

states are also affected by political negligence which comes in the form of minimum support price or other

government schemes. In one way if we will talk about the government and its relation with farmers then it is

only limited to the big farmers (jamindaar), who can easily get the government support, subsidies and can get

benefitted out of it. While marginalized farmers are still fighting with their fate due to low grade seeds, their

urgent need to earn for their stomach, costly & low grade fertilizers, pesticides, unavailability of machineries,

technical knowledge, processing and storage unit etc. Even at a point, middle men play a very good role to

    harass them economically.

This is not a story of a single state, but story of every backward state in India, whose economy is mainly de-

pendent upon agriculture. Food Processing is one of agri based industry which can support these marginal-

ized farmers as well as large one but very few people are interested in this sector, and those who are interest-

ed dont want to experiment with the crops/ vegetables/ fruits available in local, they always insist on getting

special item produced by farmers of special quality which is again where maximum of farmers are unsuccess-

ful, resulting in to reduced income. Some these selective production also result in to damage to farmers for

which one of the famous example is Potato Production for PEPSICO by farmers which led to destroy their

farm produce as the potato was not as per quality mentioned by PEPSICO.

Despite of challenges in this sector, this is one of the area which can do a lot for agriculture based popula-

tion. Surprisingly some youth from Bihar have taken it as a challenge to give this industry a boost and trying

out to present new range of products through their firms KAP Agri Products. They are working on small pro-

duction unit which can cater the need of an area. Later they have plan for expansion. In current trend, what is

found that many other organizations are working in the field of agriculture, but no one was taking dare to

challenge the big brands and push Bihar on the face of Food Processing in India.

RURAL India: Government, NGOs & People - Arpit Garg

O n 15th August 2015, we graciously cele-brated our 69th year of independence. The tremendous amount of achievement and progress

which we have made in the past decades in every field

be it science & technology, defense, infrastructure or

medicine is extremely laudable. As the World Bank

quotes, Over the past six and a half decades India has

transformed itself through agricultural revolution from

being dependent on grain imports to becoming one of

the major food exporters in the world.

In the last quarter of the year 2014, we replaced China as the fastest growing economy of the world. Now,

before you jump onto the conclusion about the bright future of our economy and us utilizing the maximum

potential of our resources, let us look at the other side of the story. The current GDP of India stands at $2.308

trillion and makes it 7th largest nominal GDP of the world. However, it is noteworthy to see that the

contribution of the rural sector of India is not as per the expectations. Rural India houses around 69% of the

total population while it merely contributes to about 32% in the Indian GDP.

Agreed, due to technological limitations, unemployment, and poor infrastructure we cannot expect rural India

to contribute in par with the urban India. But, it is certainly a thing to worry about for a country which is

poised to become the largest economy of the world in a few years. If we shed some light on the present condi-

tion at the state level, we see that Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh houses the highest urban population in terms

of percentage share with 13.5% and 11.8% respectively and are also tagged as the highest percentage

contributors in the economy of the country at about 14.1% and 8.46% of the Indian GDP respectively. If we

compare this situation with states like Bihar or Punjab, we see that for these two states, they have one of the

highest percentage of rural population in India, but are contributing very less to the GDP of our country. Bihar

houses about 11.1% of the total rural population of India but it lags behind the contribution in the Indian GDP

which is at present about 3.72% only. But, the situation isnt as gloomy as it looks. Slowly and steadily things

are picking up and we are now on the right track to bring the contribution from rural India at par with the ur-

    ban population.

  • Patliavadana (-) January 2017

An E-Magazine cum journal by Patli Urbanocrats (Trust) 9

Things are rapidly changing and with the present speed of rural empowerment, it is safer to assume that we

may soon see a rapid rise in the development of rural population and make them an important contributor in

    the Indian economy.

There are a lot of Rural Empowerment programs currently happening all over India that are taking care of lots

of areas of development like Education, Health and Medicine and providing employment to people belonging

to rural background. For instance, in Bihar there is an organization called SEEKHO India started by a

University of Pennsylvania graduate Zubin Sharma. They have provided free education to over 4000 people

since 2013 through local people. They have trained local people to become teachers and provide elementary

education to the people from all the age groups.

With this education, people may find some form of employment at local shops or can help their children to

learn. Another good instance of Rural Empowerment in Bihar can be seen from the initiatives of project

JEEVIKA started by the Government of Bihar which is also supported by World Bank. Their objective is to

enhance the income of the people through sustainable methods and livelihoods and provide social protection

including food security and help rural poor to bring in a more effective voice for their concerns. The project

covers a large base of 500,000 families of more than 4000 villages which is really commendable. The project

links people with several initiatives in the areas of agriculture, dairy products and micro financing for the

poor. Government has signed MOUs with the banks for opening of the bank accounts for the rural poor and

providing them with the credit they need. The project also covers a very important aspect of cleanliness. This

project trains people on constructing toilets in their homes and maintaining cleanliness around. There are

volunteers too assigned for this task! With the kind of initiatives happening around India and especially Bihar,

we can surely say that soon we may see rural population contributing a lot to the economy. We can see from

the statistics that it has started to give positive results. Bihar has been ranked consistently as number one state

in terms of annual percentage GDP growth since 2010. With a lot of several others initiatives and projects

coming up, we are positive for the growth of rural population in the years to come.

School Dental Health Programs: Need of Hour

    - Vivek Kumar & Vijayashree Raj Swatantra

S chool health is an important branch of community health. It is an economical and powerful means

of rising community health in future generations.

Towards the end of the 19th century, William Fisher, A dentist of England was so concerned by

the high caries experience and lack of treatment in the child population that he devoted much

time campaigning for compulsory inspection and treatment of children in schools.

On July 23rd 1898, School dentists society was formed in London.

The beginning of school health service in India dates back to 1909, when for the 1st time medical examination

of school children was carried out in Baroda city.

In 1960 The Government of India constituted a school health committee, and submitted its report in 1961.

Health appraisal is defined as the process of determining the total health status of the child through such

means as health histories, teacher and nurse observations, screening test, and medical, dental and psychologi-

cal examination. Teachers have far more contact with social children than do physicians and dentists.

Since teachers are the 1st to realize the any emergency in a school, they should be trained in handling simple

emergencies such as 1st aid and care for minor wounds and a basic knowledge about epileptics fits, fainting,

    etc.

A comprehensive school program should be administratively sound, be available to all children, provide the

facts about dental care, provide the environment for the development of psychomotor skills necessary for

    tooth brushing and flossing.

The American Dental Association, in its objectives of a community dental health program, gives the fol-

lowing aims for A school dental service to help every school child appreciate the importance of a healthy

mouth, To encourage the observances of dental health practices, including personal care, proper diet and

    oral habits.

    lege, MeerutUP )
